Newtown Garden Market runs terrarium workshops from our plant nursery on King Street in Newtown, hands-on sessions where you build a glass terrarium from scratch using live plants, potting mix, stones, and decorative elements, guided by our horticulture team.
We've been part of the King Street community since 2010, and our workshops grew out of the same philosophy that drives everything we do at the store: plants are more interesting when you understand them. Terrarium building was a natural starting point because it brings together the things we love most, choosing the right plants for the right conditions, working with your hands, and leaving with something alive that you made yourself.
Our team has deep roots in horticulture and plant retail, with formal qualifications and hundreds of students guided through hands-on plant experiences at the King Street store. We've run sessions for curious beginners, seasoned plant collectors, and corporate teams looking for something genuinely different from the usual team day activity.
What we love about teaching terrarium building is that it strips away the mystery. Most people assume glass terrariums are fiddly or technical, they're not. Watching someone realise that halfway through a session, when their build starts to take shape, is one of the best parts of what we do.
Every attendee leaves with a finished terrarium, the knowledge to keep it alive, and a coffee and giant cookie from our friends at Flour Drum just up the road.
