Marbling is the art of floating colours on a gelatinous size, manipulating them with rakes, combs, or a stylus, and then transferring the resulting pattern onto paper that has been treated with a mordant to help the colours adhere.
The history of marbling is a little imprecise; much was lost during the upheavals of the Middle Ages, but we know that it was practised in 15th-century Persia (known as abri) and in the Ottoman Empire (called ebru) around the same time. It is believed to have travelled west from Japan along the Silk Road, reaching Europe, where it flourished during the Italian Renaissance with the rise of printing. Marbling remains a cherished part of book production to this day.
What to Expect:
This hands-on class offers a joyful, experimental morning of paper marbling. Isabelle will demonstrate and guide you through at least ten traditional patterns, and you'll have the chance to explore and create your own designs as well.
Please Note:
This is not a comprehensive marbling masterclass. You will not receive recipes, notes, or instructions on making size or paints. This is a playful, process-based experience designed for you to experiment freely and enjoy the delight of marbling without pressure.
All materials and tools are provided, along with tea, coffee, and biscuits.
Please review our Terms and Conditions carefully before booking, as refunds are not available for change of mind.
