What you'll do

On the search for fun school holiday activities in Sydney? Get your teen or tween to try this metalsmithing workshop where they'll learn how to make a ring in just one day!

This fun and fast-paced jewellery making class will show your teen how to work with precious metals, and give them the confidence and skills to get creative with more DIY projects.

They'll learn how to:

Safely use tools and equipment
Size their ring
Saw-pierce metal and cut metal
Texture and stamp their ring
Roller print using feathers, leaves, fabrics, etc.
Anneal and solder metal to join the ring band
Finish and file their ring
Patinate to highlight parts of their design

At the end of the class, teens and tweens will take home their very own handmade sterling silver ring band to wear and admire!

Please note: Tweens (11-13 years) must be accompanied by an adult who can join the class or stay for free. Teenagers 14 years and older do not need to be supervised during the class.

Knowledge required

Absolute beginners welcome. Teens should have a keen interest in learning how to use real tools and equipment to make an amazing unique ring in a real working jewellery studio.

What you'll get

A materials pack valued at $25 including sterling silver to make their ring, base metal ie. copper and brass sheet and wire for sampling and playing.
All the consumables they need to make their DIY projects. That means saw blades for cutting, solder for soldering and emery paper for polishing their ring, ready to wear.
All the hand tools and equipment they need to make their projects.
Selection of teas, coffee and yummy biscuits.

What to bring

A notebook and pen/pencil.
Lunch.
Their enthusiasm for making!

Suitable for

This class is great for a birthday or hens party.

Suitable for adults, and kids (minimum 11 years old).

An adult must accompany any attending kids. The adult may observe at the class for free.

Born of a desire to create a unique space for making & learning all things jewellery and metalsmithing, SquarePeg Studios was established in 2011 and is a respected and loved part of the Sydney creative arts scene.

Jewellery artist’s studios and a busy jewellery school, each with dedicated areas under the one expansive warehouse roof, combine to make SquarePeg a hub for the jewellery community.

Our five-star school has long-form courses suited to every level, from beginners to advanced students. In addition, we have a suite of specialist workshops, from favourites we have offered for over ten years to newly developed workshops as we constantly evolve in response to our community.

Jewellery artists occupying the studios’ area benefit from the opportunity to interact with a mix of emerging and established makers in a supportive and creative environment. Some resident artists also teach in the jewellery school.

Several times a year, we open our doors to the public, hosting events like open studios, meet the makers, jewellery markets and artist talks. At these times, we encourage and welcome the community to see what we are all about and experience an energetic and vibrant creative space.
