Sumi-e Zen Art Workshop

Experience Japanese traditional Zen and mindfulness with Sumi-e art

1.5 hours Class size 1 to 10 guests

$70 (Afterpay & PayPal Pay in 4 available)

Sumi-e (Japanese ink painting) was introduced to Japan from China around 800 years ago, along with the spirit of Zen Buddhism. It was originally practised by Zen monks as a form of training and discipline.
In today’s busy and often chaotic world, the mindfulness of Zen is more important than ever.
This art workshop begins with an introduction to “What is Sumi-e?” and includes a clear explanation of the traditional tools used in ink painting—ink, ink stone, Japanese paper, and brushes (known as the “Four Treasures”).
In the practical session, we will start with the Zen circle (Ensō), followed by around four basic motifs.
This class offers an authentic and traditional experience in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a solid understanding of the fundamental techniques and the unique characteristics of Sumi-e.

My name is Masayo — I’m a Sumie (Japanese ink painting) artist, children’s art teacher at Crows Nest, business owner, and freelance graphic designer.
Before moving to Australia, I worked as a graphic designer in Japan for many years. After giving birth in Australia, I discovered my passion for nurturing creativity and connections between people, which led me to start a children’s art class.
I began practicing Sumie in 2017, and since 2022, I have been invited to hold workshops at various events. These days, I regularly conduct Sumie workshops at local high schools (as part of art incursions) and at many Japanese cultural festivals throughout the year.
Unlike realistic painting, Sumie focuses not on copying appearances but on expressing the spirit and vitality of nature as felt through the heart. Deeply connected with Zen philosophy, Sumie allows us to experience mindfulness through the process of creation.
Each class includes an introduction to the philosophy of Sumie, along with guidance on the unique tools and brush techniques used.
It’s an enjoyable and meaningful art activity suitable for all skill levels.
