Jeff Fan, a youthful, Sydney-based Chinese Calligraphy and Brush Painting artist, and a former acting president of the Australian Oriental Calligraphy Society, and member of the China Hunan Calligraphers Association, has been studying, practising and creating calligraphy and painting for more than 33 years.

Jeff has published several articles on Chinese calligraphy. He participates and co-organises Chinese calligraphy exhibitions every year, his works are collected by many companies in Sydney and China. Nowadays, Jeff’s works become more and more popular in Sydney because of the positive, powerful and unique personal expression.

Wish Wings Studio aims to deliver Chinese traditional folk arts, Chinese contemporary arts, visual culture and Chinese traditional martial arts in an engaging way to an Australian audience. Through various programmes including training courses, exhibitions, events, residencies, collaborations and research projects we attempt to enrich the cultural landscape of Australia through oriental artistic diversity.

Our aims are:
  • To encourage a larger mainstream audience to engage with Chinese arts, and to avoid overly traditional representations of Chinese culture and folklore
  • To advance the education of the public in traditional Chinese arts and culture
  • To enhance the visibility of the Chinese artistic community
  • To act as an agency for Chinese arts in Australia, and to become an international agency for Chinese artworks
  • To develop a unique collection, and exhibition platform, of Chinese artworks

We focus on:
  • Chinese Calligraphy (all levels)
  • Chinese Traditional Ink Painting
  • Chinese Tai Chi - and Plum flower boxing (mei-hua-quan)

Teacher was very friendly & patience in conveying his idea & the principles in the basics of Chinese Calligraphy. The venue & materials provided was adequate in conducting the lesson.
Supposed it would be good to have some handout to take home as there were quite a lot to remember.
Otherwise, it’s a very good experience in knowing the basics of Chinese Calligraphy.

A friend and I booked a private class to do with our dad’s for Christmas.
Jeff created a very warm and inviting environment offering tea whist providing us with a brief history of the art and the tools we’d be using.

Despite our varying skill levels, Jeff’s teaching method felt all inclusive. He was patient and encouraging.

Jeff asked each of us what we would like to achieve by the end of the class with a focus on a word or a short phrase. If you did not come prepared with an idea, he had an album of words to choose from.

We learnt the fundamentals of how to hold a brush, the basic strokes and applied these techniques to our calligraphy.

It was a very enjoyable experience and potential new hobby.

Definitely recommend this workshop to those interested!

This class was way above my expectations!
The teacher, Master Jeff is the nicest & most humble man. He is very knowledgeable & very calm
I learnt so much in the 2 1/2 hrs, there is so much more to calligraphy than just writing Chinese words.
Anybody who does this short lesson will come away relaxed from today’s hectic world & a small understanding of the amazing & fascinating art of Chinese calligraphy.
Master Jeff may even have a surprise mini tour going back thousands of years (if you as a student, deserve it)?
