Beginners Cyanotype Workshop: Simply Blue

Discover the magical cyanotype process

4 hours Class size 1 to 7

label $165 (or 4 payments of $41 Afterpay)

Join floral artist Lisa Shepherd in an introduction to the historic alternative photographic process of Cyanotype printing which is a form of cameraless photography.

After a quick introduction to the history of cyanotypes and how they are created, you will be shown how to safely mix and coat paper and then expose your design to ultraviolet light to produce beautiful Prussian blue coloured art. You will be guided in design composition and shown how to create visually pleasing artwork step-by-step.

You will learn all aspects of the process including making photograms from pressed flowers and plant cuttings as well as using feathers, lace, doilies, stencils and digital negatives. Be thrilled when you expose your image to reveal beautiful images, it never fails to delight.

We will discuss pressing your own flowers at home and how to preserve them for future work. You are encouraged to bring along your favourite flowers to print with or something special from your garden. Delicate flowers and leaves are best to print with.

Fresh flowers can be used but they should not be too thick and bulky as they need to go under glass; this is when pressed give better results. You will get to print three pieces on paper and create an artwork on fabric. You will also be introduced to the wet cyanotype process with the view to learning more in the advanced class.

If you enjoy photography, working with flowers and plant material this four-hour workshop is a perfect opportunity for you to learn this beautiful process in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Morning tea will be provided but please bring your own lunch and inform me of any specific dietary requirements.

Bring your creativity and a warm smile as you discover this magical process!

What a great workshop! Lisa was welcoming and made the group feel comfortable straight away. She explained the cyanotype process clearly and was very generous with sharing her knowledge. The venue was perfect for this course and the group size was also good - we all were able to have our questions answered. And the morning tea was delicious!
I left the course inspired to try some cyanotype printing and feel I have enough skills to give it a go at home.

Lisa’s workshop was one of the best I have attended. It was completely hands-on and we completed 5 projects. I now feel perfectly comfortable that I can re-create my efforts at home.
If that were not enough, a morning tea of Lisa’s handmade goodies made for a really delightful day out.

Presentation couldn't have been more thoughtful as well as beautiful. The table was set with a work station for everyone, plus wonderful notes. There was a great morning tea as a warm-up and get to know each other, followed by a visual slideshow. Then Lisa would show what we would do every step of the way and we would follow on. Everyone made artwork to take home, their own styles. Everyone was encouraged to try different techniques. Lisa is a great teacher, warm-hearted, generous and kind. She runs a great cyanotype workshop and I highly recommend anyone to her.
