Join Parish Stapleton for a slow and immersive introduction to cyanotype printing in Redfern. This camera-free photographic process combines science and art, using sunlight or UV exposure to create distinctive Prussian blue images from natural materials.
Parish’s creative practice is grounded in beauty, nature, and exploration through play. This workshop invites you into that way of working — experimenting without pressure, following curiosity rather than a fixed outcome.
The session includes a brief introduction to the history of cyanotype, developed by Sir John Herschel in 1842, and its pioneering use by Anna Atkins, whose Victorian-era work became the first photographic book documenting British algae and ferns.
Under Parish’s guidance, you’ll learn how to safely mix cyanotype chemistry, coat paper, and prepare it for exposure. You’ll explore composition and image-making through arranging botanical materials, paying attention to light, shadow, balance, and negative space.
Using pressed flowers, leaves, plant cuttings, lace, and other natural materials, you’ll create a series of unique photograms. The moment of washing and revealing each print is an integral part of the process, offering both surprise and satisfaction.
Participants are welcome to bring personal botanical items or meaningful natural elements. For best results, thinner or pressed specimens are recommended.
By the end of the two-and-a-half-hour workshop, you’ll leave with:
– several finished cyanotype prints
– the knowledge and confidence to continue exploring the process independently
Designed for beginners and those with creative experience alike, this workshop offers a relaxed, supportive environment with a small group size of up to six participants. Morning tea is provided.
