Explore nature through cyanotype photography and create luminous botanical photograms in a calm, hands-on workshop.

2.5 hours

Class size 1 to 6 (public classes), 2 to 5

  $105 - $123 ($123 per guest when you book for 1 guest, $117/guest for 2 guests, $111/guest for 3 guests, $105/guest for 4+ guests) (Afterpay available)

Join Parish Stapleton for a slow and immersive introduction to cyanotype printing in Redfern. This camera-free photographic process combines science and art, using sunlight or UV exposure to create distinctive Prussian blue images from natural materials.
Parish’s creative practice is grounded in beauty, nature, and exploration through play. This workshop invites you into that way of working — experimenting without pressure, following curiosity rather than a fixed outcome.
The session includes a brief introduction to the history of cyanotype, developed by Sir John Herschel in 1842, and its pioneering use by Anna Atkins, whose Victorian-era work became the first photographic book documenting British algae and ferns.
Under Parish’s guidance, you’ll learn how to safely mix cyanotype chemistry, coat paper, and prepare it for exposure. You’ll explore composition and image-making through arranging botanical materials, paying attention to light, shadow, balance, and negative space.
Using pressed flowers, leaves, plant cuttings, lace, and other natural materials, you’ll create a series of unique photograms. The moment of washing and revealing each print is an integral part of the process, offering both surprise and satisfaction.
Participants are welcome to bring personal botanical items or meaningful natural elements. For best results, thinner or pressed specimens are recommended.
By the end of the two-and-a-half-hour workshop, you’ll leave with:
– several finished cyanotype prints
– the knowledge and confidence to continue exploring the process independently
Designed for beginners and those with creative experience alike, this workshop offers a relaxed, supportive environment with a small group size of up to six participants. Morning tea is provided.

  • 5/5 from Kasia Nowacka, attended Feb 2026: I enjoyed the cyanotype workshop with Parish. It was relaxed, well organised, and easy to follow, even if you’ve never tried anything like it before. There was something really satisfying about the whole process, laying things out, not knowing exactly how it’ll turn out, and then seeing the prints come to life. It pulled everyone in. People were focused and curious Clear guidance, no pressure, lots of encouragement to play and experiment. I left feeling calmer and inspired
  • 5/5 from Julia Hickleton, attended Jan 2026: I attended Parish Stapleton’s cyanotype workshop in Redfern and found it to be a really well held, thoughtful and enjoyable introduction to the process. The session was inclusive and supportive throughout, and I felt seen and encouraged while still being free to work in my own way. Parish is highly knowledgeable and generous with his information. He shares both the technical aspects and the historical background of cyanotype with real clarity, making the method feel accessible without losing its depth. Learning about Sir John Herschel and Anna Atkins added welcome context, framing cyanotype as a practice that sits between science and creative exploration. One of the most valuable insights I took away was the power of simplicity. Working with a single fern frond showed just how striking the results can be when you allow the process to speak for itself. The moment of washing each print was always revealing and extraordinary. The pacing felt balanced and unhurried, giving plenty of room to experiment, ask questions and absorb the process. The small group size created an easy, focused atmosphere, and the environment felt relaxed and inclusive. I also appreciated the quiet presence of Ella, Parish’s chocolate Labrador, who observed from the corner and gratefully accepted every tummy rub offered. She added a gentle, grounding warmth to the space. I would recommend this workshop to anyone interested in alternative photographic processes or wanting to explore cyanotype in a supportive setting that balances technical learning with genuine creative discovery.
