There will be time to learn to draft additional patterns

In this class, you will learn simple methods to transfer designs to fabric and stitch these designs to create wonderful repeating patterns. Sashiko originated in Japan, where it was used to add warmth and strength to clothing to preserve the precious cloth. Nowadays, I think of it as a mindful and relaxing way to insert meaning, stories, and beauty into the fabric, where the process of stitching carries the well-being benefit, and the final result is a bonus object of beauty to enjoy.
The work is done completely by hand and is suitable for beginners to sewing as well as those with experience. Completed sashiko works can be added to clothing or quilts, turned into a stand-alone quilt block, made into bags or homewares, or framed and hung on the wall. This class will not include backing your work in the live class but will include a method of turning your work into a complete quilt block in the instructions and video that accompany the live class.

FAQ

Will I need to know how to sew?
No special skills are needed. I will teach anything you need to know including how to do a running stitch which is the core stitch to learn for any type of hand stitching.
Will the session be recorded for playback later?
No. In the interests of privacy I don't record the live sessions. I want people to feel free to talk openly and enjoy the time in a relaxed environment. However I will provide access to a prerecorded instructional video that is an unlisted video on YouTube and this will be available indefinitely to watch before the class and after if you need a refresher.

Art should be for everyone. I've experienced the benefits to health that engaging in art can bring and I want to share this with others. I am offering classes at an affordable price in order to be as inclusive as possible. My hope is that these classes introduce people to a happy place where they can go, both in times of stress, and for fun and relaxation everyday.
I am predominantly a textile artist, although I've dabbled in most mediums. I completed a Fine Arts degree with Honours in 2021 but am grateful for my TasTafe Visual Arts Certificate IV which was my gateway into art in 2013. More recently I have been teaching beginner quilt classes, sock knitting and crochet classes at Community Centres in Hobart. I love seeing my participants complete their quilts, and the pleasure and pride that the process and end result can bring.
