In this unique Sydney workshop, your teacher will introduce you to the immersive world of botanical alchemy and contemporary textile design in three parts.
You will first learn how to manipulate fabric to create striking, high-contrast textures using traditional indigo Shibori tie-dye methods. Next, you will dive into Batik, mastering the hot wax-resist technique to map out clean linework and detailed motifs while combining it with contemporary plant painting skills. Finally, you will explore advanced multi-colour over-dyeing, learning how to layer different botanical pigments directly onto the fabric to build rich gradients, secondary tones and expressive, fluid brushwork.
This is a hands-on workshop where we will explore a variety of natural hand-dyeing and modern colour application techniques. You'll apply every skill mastered throughout the day to design, dye and paint your own collection of wearable contemporary art pieces.
This class is taught using dyeing materials that are completely natural and non-toxic.

It all began when I stood by a river in South Asia, its heavy, unnatural blue carrying the smell of chemicals. That colour wasn’t nature. It was synthetic dyes and toxins from fast-fashion factories. I realised chemical dyeing doesn’t just stain fabric; it stains the planet.
That moment led me to plants, to colours drawn from leaves, bark, roots, and flowers.
I don’t limit myself to a single plant-dye tradition.
Instead, I merge Japanese, Chinese, Australian and many other techniques to explore a wider spectrum of colour and possibility.
My journey in plant dyeing has taken me through different countries, teachers and landscapes. Every place has shaped the way I see colour. With years of experience, I’ve learned to combine methods, materials and philosophies to create tones that feel both grounded and unexpected.
For me, plant dyeing isn’t just a technique. It’s a living practice. I invite you to experience these colours with me, to feel the quiet beauty that nature offers when different cultures meet in the dye pot.
