We started our paper flower journey over ten years ago after discovering a book at Kinokuniya with incredibly lifelike paper begonias. It was by Livia Cetti, and it sparked a deep dive into the world of paper artistry, learning, experimenting, and quickly becoming completely hooked.
Our connection to paper actually began earlier, through theatre and creating paper costumes, and was further shaped by a memorable trip to Japan in 2012, learning origami from a 90-year-old woman despite not sharing a common language.
Emmanuelle Lacassagne joined Fleurs Excentriques a year ago as the company grew. Her background in interior design brings a strong sense of staging to our work, and her experience as a French teacher has been invaluable as our workshops have expanded to welcome more and more students.
We love teaching because it allows us to share something we’re passionate about while keeping things simple, creative, and fun. Our students constantly inspire us with their ideas, and we pride ourselves on creating inclusive workshops for adults, children, ESL learners, and people with diverse learning needs.
Between us, we bring over 30 years of teaching experience and have run workshops through the Community Migrant Resource Centre (CMRC) in North Ryde, the South Sydney Uniting Church art classes in Redfern, and for the Cumberland Council, alongside our ongoing paper flower programs.
A fun fact: we created a three-metre paper Gymea lily for the Unsettled exhibition at the Australian Museum in 2021. It took a full month to make just one!
