Australian Sunset Oil Landscapes Workshop

3.5 hours Class size 1 to 14 guests

$79 (Afterpay & PayPal Pay in 4 available)

Join us for an immersive and inspiring oil painting workshop where you will explore the luminous beauty of an Australian sunset, guided by the aesthetic of the Heidelberg School, also known as Australian Impressionism.
Working from the intense golden light and distinctive landscapes captured by artists such as Arthur Streeton, Tom Roberts, and their colleagues, you will learn how to recreate that shimmering atmosphere in oil using modern water-mixable oils and compatible mediums for a clean and accessible studio experience.
You can choose between two creative pathways during the session:
  • Beginner option: Follow step-by-step instructions as you replicate the instructor’s demonstration and composition.
  • Intermediate or experienced option: Work independently from a provided reference image, applying the same techniques while designing your own composition.
What you'll get
  • An understanding of how to mix and apply Winsor & Newton water-mixable oil colours to achieve the soft glow and radiant atmosphere characteristic of the Heidelberg School.
  • Practical use of water-mixable oil mediums to enhance flow, glazing, and subtle light effects.
  • Step-by-step techniques for capturing a sunset landscape, including underpainting, blocking in broad colour planes, building midtones and highlights, and finishing with expressive brushwork.
  • Insight into the unique light of the Australian landscape, including the high sun glow, deep shadows, golden grasses, and eucalyptus silhouettes.
  • Guidance on creative composition, including the use of low horizon lines, expansive skies, and loose brushwork to evoke the openness and immediacy seen in plein air works of the Heidelberg painters.
  • Safe and simple finishing methods, including how to clean brushes, store water-mixable oils, and prepare your artwork in a ready-to-display format.
Whether you are new to oils or an experienced painter, you will leave with a radiant Australian sunset landscape and a deeper appreciation for the techniques that shaped one of Australia’s most iconic art movements.
