What is a flower cloud workshop and where can I do one in Sydney?
A flower cloud workshop teaches the professional floristry technique behind one of the most dramatic table centrepiece styles — a dense, vase-less arrangement of seasonal blooms built on a floral foam base that appears to float above the table. Merchant & Green at 686 Bourke Street, Redfern is the only studio in Sydney offering a dedicated flower cloud workshop. In the one-hour class, students learn the 360-degree building technique, professional foam mechanics, and how to reflex roses — a florist skill for opening petals to their fullest form — to create a 20x20cm flower cloud centrepiece to take home. $195pp, public classes up to 6 guests.
What is a reflexed rose and how is it used in a flower cloud?
A reflexed rose is a classic professional floristry technique where the outer petals of a rose are gently folded back by hand, opening the bloom to its fullest and most luxurious form. The result is a dramatically fuller, more voluminous flower that contributes significantly to the cloud-like density of a flower cloud arrangement. At Merchant & Green’s Flower Cloud Workshop in Redfern, students are taught to reflex roses as part of the class — a genuine florist skill most people have never been shown — before incorporating them into their finished centrepiece alongside complementary seasonal blooms and foliage.
How is a flower cloud different to a regular flower arrangement?
A flower cloud is built without a vase — the structure is a floral foam base in a shallow tray, allowing blooms to be inserted from every angle to create a 360-degree composition that appears to float above the table rather than sit in a container. Unlike a hand-tied bouquet or vase arrangement which has a clear front-facing orientation, a flower cloud is designed to be viewed from all sides simultaneously — making it ideal as a dining table centrepiece where guests sit around it. At Merchant & Green’s Flower Cloud Workshop in Redfern, students learn the professional mechanics behind this technique in a one-hour beginner-friendly class, taking home a finished 20x20cm flower cloud for $195pp.
