Writing rules

Writing Rules

You'll

  • Learn Tanya's rules to manage overthinking that blank page.
  • Form a story circle and share something with the group. Nothing scary!
  • Try your first timed writing exercise. Don't worry, there will be prompts to get you started, and no pressure to share what you write.

Timed writing exercise

Timed Writing Exercise

Now your muscles are warm, we'll discuss generating your own writing prompts, and you'll do another 10 minute writing exercise. Again, there'll be no pressure to share what you write.

Reflections

Reflections

We'll discuss the exercises - what felt good, what surprised you, and where you might take these short pieces.
Participants often go away with the beginnings of a poem, short story or article - we'll talk about how you might develop your work.

Wrapping up

Wrapping Up

We'll consider the benefits of building a personal writing practice and ways to make it stick.

There will also be recommendations for tailored resources and further learning.

In this introduction to creative writing, you'll learn simple techniques to start:
  • revealing your creative voice
  • figuring out your story
  • overcoming fear of the blank page (or screen!)
We'll begin with the 7 rules that make it possible for anyone to write, before diving into a short exploration of storytelling. Once you're feeling comfortable, you'll start your first timed writing exercise, with lots of encouragement and support.
Writing Rescue is a safe and inclusive space where you can begin exploring your story, for fun, for self-expression, or for healing.
You'll be invited to share, but sharing is 100% OPTIONAL.
Tanya will share timed writing examples with you, and you'll learn to listen without judgement.
