My name is Tamila and I’ve always been connected to the ocean since childhood. My dad owned a restaurant just ten steps from the shore, and he would take me and my brothers for a swim. The ocean quickly became more than just a place to cool off, it became a second home, a place where I felt most alive and free.
When I moved to Australia, I knew I wanted to keep that same connection by living close to the sea. The pivotal moment that shaped my journey came during my first swim at Cabbage Tree Bay in Manly, NSW. I was amazed by the vibrant underwater world, but what struck me even more was seeing how many people wanted to experience it but didn’t know how to swim confidently or use proper breathing techniques for snorkelling. That’s when it hit me! So many were missing out on this magical experience. I decided I wanted to help bridge that gap.
Teaching allows me to combine my lifelong love for the ocean with the joy of helping others achieve something they once thought was out of reach. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing someone’s face light up when they discover the underwater world for the first time — the same wonder I felt as a kid.
I also love teaching about the importance of marine sanctuaries and ocean preservation. Cabbage Tree Bay, for example, is a protected aquatic reserve that’s home to an incredible diversity of marine life. Helping people understand not only how to enjoy it safely, but also how to respect and protect it, is at the heart of what I do. For me, it’s about creating experiences that inspire people to fall in love with the ocean and once you love something, you naturally want to take care of it.
Over the past 8+ years, I’ve guided more than 300 snorkelling tours across all age gaps, helping swimmers, non-swimmers, and first-timers experience the ocean safely and confidently. I’m a certified swimming instructor, a qualified surf lifesaver, and hold all the necessary certifications for marine rescues and CPR during emergencies. I also hold a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, which has given me a strong foundation in coaching, leadership, and safety practices.
Beyond individual tours, I regularly lead large open group sessions and team-bonding activities for businesses and staff gatherings. Guiding big groups through the water, often filled with beginners, has taught me how to make sessions both safe and fun, while building confidence in every participant.
Something people may not know is that snorkelling isn’t just about swimming; it’s about learning how to breathe, relax, and connect with the environment around you. My goal is to make every class welcoming, inspiring, and unforgettable — leaving people not only with a new skill, but also with a deeper respect for the ocean.
