Nacre inlay, also called mother of pearl inlay, is one of China's traditional decorative arts. It involves processing the shells of molluscs such as conch, clam, and mussels into thin slices carved and assembled into patterns of flowers, figures, birds, and animals. These patterns are inlaid onto surfaces of objects such as lacquerware or wooden items. The craft originated during the Shang and Zhou dynasties, became popular during the Tang and Song dynasties, and reached its peak during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Based on the materials used for inlay, nacre can be classified into two categories: hard nacre inlay and soft nacre inlay. The craft reached its peak during the Ming and Qing dynasties and has continued to be passed down to the present day.Through the meticulous polishing and finishing work of skilled craftspeople, mother-of-pearl inlay products exhibit brilliant lustre, fantastical colours and exquisite visual effects. By personally creating a mother-of-pearl inlaid brooch or hairpin, you can gain an appreciation for the elegant and luxurious artistic beauty found in the intricate inlaying process. Integrating this quintessential Chinese aesthetic into daily life can help us find moments of tranquillity and relaxation amidst the busy modern world, allowing you to reconnect with nature and cultivate inner peace. This workshop focuses on a delicate, slow-paced craft process.Participants will carefully break mother-of-pearl into small fragments and place each piece one by one to build a detailed design. This is a patience-based activity that requires focus, steady hands, and attention to fine details. The process can feel meticulous at times, but it is this careful, step-by-step work that creates the beauty of the final piece. Please note before booking:
This is not a fast or hands-off activity
The process requires patience and concentration
Guests who prefer quick or casual crafting experiences may find this workshop demanding

5/5 from Camilla Leong, attended Feb 2026: Got the experience of breaking ‘mother of pearls’ into tiny pieces. The instructions were very straightforward. A small table lamp was provided for additional lighting which made sticking on the smashed pieces a lot easier! Assembling the pieces onto my brooch required lots of patience, but all was worth it in the end! Was offered and given tea to keep hydrated throughout the long time I spent making it.
3/5 from Kate, attended Jan 2026: It was harder than I expected. Better lighting and perhaps a magnifying glass would have helped. No snacks provided and only cups of water.
2/5 from Lynne Taylor, attended Jan 2026: We weren’t expected and nothing was prepared. The “teacher” knew how to do it but was poor with her communication. We were left to do it our selves with only a simple explanation on the task. Only a few designs were available and was told we had to do a brooch. We asked for a drink and she said we had to buy from her. There was no food provided or available. lighting was poor and we struggled. When we asked if she had a lamp she provided us with one. Overall an average class but made a beautiful brooch.
5/5 from Emilee Lay, attended May 2025: Great class, really easy and straightforward and the options re colour and design were plentiful! Thanks again.
4/5 from Nerine Cox, attended Apr 2025: My daughter and I spend a couple of hours making a brooch in a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Heaps to choose from and great service.
5/5 from Christopher Day, attended Jan 2025: I had a really fun time, the broaches were really beautiful.
5/5 from Rachel Hsia, attended Jan 2025: The teacher was very helpful and told us everything we needed to know, they seemed more than happy to assist us un any way. We got to pick a peice of jewelry (there were brooches, hair stick/pins, and a bracelet to pick from) to fill in with mother of pearl peices that we break into peices ourselves. It was frustrating sometimes to try and fit small pieces into small areas, but a good activity to slow yourself down and really focus :)
5/5 from Emily Chiu, attended Dec 2024: It's a pretty beginner friendly, straightforward class so we didn't need that much input from our teacher. My advice to people who have reading glasses, you'll need it.
5/5 from Elysia de Leon, attended Dec 2024: It's was fun and easy, it just takes a long time type of craft
5/5 from Mimi Han, attended Dec 2024: This Mother Of Pearl class was very fun! The staff were very lovely and helpful. The pearls were very colourful, cute and great quality. The finished products were stunning. I would strongly recommend this class for anyone!
5/5 from Leana Zhang, attended Dec 2024: easy to understand! it was fun and requires alot of focus trying to glue the small pieces of shards in the pins!
5/5 from Tiffany Wei, attended Dec 2024: My friend and I went to make this for fun and it was one of the most fun experience we've had! Although it was a bit hard at first but, it was really easy to pick up on and get things moving! Our teacher was really really sweet and nice. She explained the process very well and helped whenever we had questions or problems. Patience was very much needed and it was sometimes a little bit frustrating BUT!! I felt like I was really really happy with my final product and it really paid off all the frustration (and work haha) that I did. I think? My favourite part was probably seeing everything come together and how nicely the colours complimented each other! But yes! 10/10 experience, and 100% would go back!!!
5/5 from Jasmin Lin, attended Oct 2024: Fun class, the teacher was helpful and encouraging. She encouraged me to very creative. Thanks for an enjoyable and creative Saturday. I will treasure my brooch.
