Participants in this foundational glass bead workshop will create their own colourful beads using flameworking techniques and soft Moretti glass. Students will also learn about the tools and equipment used in the glass studio to create patterns with dots, stringers, and marbles. They will have the opportunity to discover the magic of glass beadmaking and practice techniques such as colour application, shaping, and hot sculpting.
Class overview:
1) Discover the various types of glass including soft glass (soda lime glass) and hard glass (borosilicate).
2) Discuss the essential safety equipment needed, such as didymium glasses, a safety apron, appropriate clothing, shoes and ventilation.
3) Share best practices for handling glass rods and safely storing hot beads.
4) Describe the different torches used in beadmaking, including propane/oxygen and surface mix torches.
5) Explain how to prepare mandrels with bead release, facilitating the removal of beads after cooling.
6) Guide on beginning a bead by melting glass onto a mandrel.
7) Techniques for creating patterns with dots and marbles and arranging colours.
8) Instructions on forming the initial round shape and using tools to achieve unique designs.
9) Overview of the cooling process.
10) Tips on crafting bracelets or necklaces with your handmade beads.
Throughout the class, you’ll be guided through the process in a supportive environment in a small group, helping to alleviate any fears for beginners.
