Are you keen to try out a new creative hobby? Join Isabelle for this bookbinding for this class aimed at beginners and learn the basics of creating your own journals and diaries from scratch!

In this intensive class, you'll be guided by an industry professional, as you learn about and familiarise yourself with the materials and various bookbinding techniques such as sewing, cutting and assembling used in this craft practice.

Isabelle will teach you three different bookbinding techniques, you will make your own Leather Venetian journal, a Japanese stab-binding book, and a pamphlet book.

If you're looking for fun things to do on a weekend morning, why not try out Isabelle's intensive bookbinding class and get in touch with your creative side. Not only will you get the chance to meet like-minded people, in a relaxed and fun environment, but you'll also leave feeling confident in your new skills with a whole new bunch of books to use too!

Closing date for booking:
You can pick up a kit from the bindery up to 48 hours before class commences.
For those who want a kit sent to them, please note you need to book at least 5 days before class commences.

This workshop booking is for one person only. Additional participants must book in individually, regardless of household arrangement or age.

Please note:
Though this is a technical workshop, anyone with enthusiasm for making books and sewing is welcome to join in. No experience is necessary, but the workshop requires a certain level of capability and confidence in using sharp instruments and being able to follow verbal instructions is expected.

No refunds for Online workshops once commenced. A Zoom link will be sent out to you a few days before. We'll start gathering students 10 minutes before the workshop. Lateness will not be accommodated.

This class is beginner-friendly, perfect for anyone looking to get into bookbinding. No prior experience necessary! The workshop does require a certain level of capability and confidence in using sharp instruments and being able to follow verbal instructions is expected.

In a few hours you will learn how to make three vastly different projects:
  • A single sections pamphlet book, finished with decorative paper.
  • A Japanese Stab Binding in a fancy stitch, covered in full book cloth, lined with decorative paper.
  • A Venetian Journal in full leather with decorative stitching and a leather tie.

Isabelle McGowan is a Florence-trained Bookbinder working through her Bindery, the Owl & Lion. She specialises in Historical Repair and Restoration of Books, Fine Bindings and Traditional Gold Finishing.

Isabelle completed her Fine Arts Degree (Drawing and Painting, Printmaking) at the Edinburgh College of Art, in Scotland. She went on to train as a Bookbinder in Florence, Italy.

The original Owl and Lion Bindery was situated in Old Town Edinburgh, Scotland.

In late 2017, Isabelle and the Owl and Lion Bindery relocated to Sydney, Australia.
