What you'll do

Learn hand-building pottery techniques (no wheel required) in this fun and relaxing live streaming class!

In this live online class, your experienced teacher will demonstrate how to make plates, bowls or platters with amazing textures. With just a few hacks you will be able to make these perfectly decorative pottery pieces for your own home. The basic principles are the same for all three, and you can choose which one to complete in the class.

The live classes are run with a limited number of people so that everyone gets a chance to ask questions and so that your teacher can provide personalised tips and tricks on how to build shape and texture.

You will build one shape in this class and learn a bunch of things about sculpting, glazing and firing ceramics. After you make your clay art piece, you will need to leave it to dry for a few days (time depends on its thickness and weather conditions) and the next steps are firing and glazing the piece.

You can book into a glazing class after this hand-building ceramics class, but your teacher will also instruct you verbally if you want to continue your artistic endeavours on your own.

It is a great idea to get in touch with the teacher prior to class to advise what style/pattern you like so that we can customise a perfect craft box for you.

You have an option to work with two clays: air drying clay and natural clay that fires in ceramic kilns and makes perfect tableware.

Air drying clay's advantage is that no firing is necessary and you get to see the final result straight away. It gets quite solid and can hold fruits and knick-knacks. The disadvantage is that it will never be as sturdy and resilient as kiln-fired clay and also can not be glazed, but you can apply acrylic paint. These can be water-resistant if sealed with a commercial water sealant but are not suitable for functional ware.

All of Irina's pieces displayed in the photos above are made out of natural clay and are perfectly functional.

Knowledge required

No skills required; beginner-friendly.

What you'll get in your craft kit

Clay cube suitable for one medium-sized bowl or plate - 700 gr
One wooden tool suitable for making your first ceramic piece (you can use some spread knives as well and it's all very easy to wash)
One texture sheet (you can also get your own leaves, lace or any texture of your preference)
Sponge for blending slabs and perfecting the surface

What you'll need

Have a flat clean surface/tabletop available - at least 50x 50 cm. Put a piece of the plastic sheet from the craft box over it, but do not attach to the table (we want to move it at one point).
Feel free to use any of the tools that you perhaps already have - we could use a cutter, simple kitchen knife etc. When your piece dries, you may want to use sanding paper, but it is entirely up to you.
Depending on the shape you'd like to make, have some kitchen items to use as moulds such as a bowl, plate or a tray of a certain shape you may like
Rolling pin - or any cylinder that can help us flatten the clay

Hi, I'm Irina.

I like to introduce myself as a sculptor, although I'm engaged in different art disciplines too. I have never had another profession, nor have I wanted one. I fell in love with three-dimensional art at a very early age which came to me naturally, as I was born in a family of artists. It was the world I've grown up in, a measure of value around me.

I have graduated from Fine Arts, majoring in Sculpture, and with a bit of luck, I had a chance to work internationally and gain great experience in different industries and media. Cooperating with professionals from other creative fields has perfectioned my skills and broadened the views of my artistic expression.
