15 DIY Ideas for Mother's Day

15 DIY Ideas for Mother's Day

By Jana Lepojevic

Remember when your Mother’s Day gift was macaroni pasted onto paper? Let’s bring that back, but better! Part nostalgia, part genuine thoughtfulness, making your own DIY gifts for Mum brings back those childhood memories, when Mum was proud of your effort, and you were happy to show you cared. Let’s do away with mass-produced items and focus on those things that can’t be replaced—time and effort.

The secret to an actually good DIY gift (one that Mum can actually use)? Making it at a workshop! You’ll learn from the pro’s and have everything you need provided, so it’s easy to start and finish. And if you invite Mum along to the workshop, it’s a win-win!

Let’s get those creative juices flowing with these DIY ideas for Mother’s Day.

1. Handmade ceramics

Rustic and homely, handmade ceramics add a certain charm to homes and kitchens. When you make something yourself in a pottery class and give it to Mum on Mother’s Day, the cuteness factor is off the charts. Give Mum a unique mug, a wonky vase or even a quirky little clay sculpture and watch her place it in a point of pride in her home. It’s like fridge macaroni, but for adults.

Pottery is a fun, lowkey activity to do together, too, so you can always book an experience for two and spend some time with Mum!

2. A personalised notebook

If super sentimental came in gift form, a handmade notebook would top the list. Bookbinding classes let you choose the cover, the paper, the style and all the little details that turn it into something she’ll keep by her side for years. It will become her go-to place for notes and doodles. And she’ll think of you whenever she uses it.

Go solo and make her a one-of-a-kind journal, or bring her along so she can design her own. Perfect for list-makers, note-takers, or Mums who always have a running list in their head.

3. DIY jewellery

Giving Mum jewellery for Mother’s Day is a classic, but sometimes your style and her style don’t quite get along. A jewellery making class is where you can get Mum jewellery she’ll actually like, because she made it herself! From necklaces to earrings and cute little charm bracelets, jewellery making can be as intensive or casual as you like, and at the end, Mum will have a one-of-a-kind item she can proudly wear.

4. A treasured wooden keepsake

Woodworking may seem quite involved, but when you head to a woodworking workshop, it’s all broken down step-by-step with everything provided. You can go whimsical and small with a whittling class, get hands-on and make your own photo frame or even go as big as handmade furniture. Whatever you choose, this is a DIY idea for Mother’s Day that is sure to impress!

5. Good eats

If Mum is always the one cooking, this is your moment to flip the script. Head to a cooking class and learn how to make pasta from scratch, master dumplings, or finally nail that dish she loves. Then recreate it for her at home, so she can be the one to sit back and relax as she gets served her favourite meal. Or, skip the homework and bring her along. You cook, you eat, you don’t do the dishes. Everyone wins.

6. Sweet treats

A box of chocolates is a traditional Mother’s Day treat, and if you’ve got a sweet toothed Mum on your hands, one that’s sure to delight. Make it DIY at a chocolate class and craft something with the flavours you know she’ll love. This is a fun one to do together, and it means there’s double the chocolate!

7. Something soft and cosy

Whether it’s a scarf, a beanie or a slightly uneven blanket, making something yourself in a crochet or knitting class is a Mother’s Day DIY gift that screams time and effort. It’s comfort in gift form and something that Mum will actually use on those cold nights.

8. Meaningful art

You don’t need to be the next Picasso to pull off making Mum some handmade art for Mother’s Day. At a painting workshop, you’ll be guided by an artist who can help fix any mistakes and maybe even contribute a little to the final piece. It might seem like a risky DIY idea for Mother’s Day, but Mum will probably just love the effort that’s gone into it, and the thought.

Paint and sip classes are especially good for connecting with others, so if you want to paint with Mum, give them a try.

9. A cheeseboard decorated by hand

Not all Mum’s (and their children) are particularly talented in the art department, but that shouldn’t stop you from going down the DIY route. After all, not all art is hard. Enter resin art. It’s more about pouring than recreating, so as long as you can pick colours and meld them together, you can still walk away with something pretty. Decorate a charcuterie board for Mum at a resin art class, or go together and make a board each for your future cheese and wine nights.

10. A not-so-standard candle

Candles are classic gifts. Handmade candles are thoughtful. Head to a candle making class and choose the scent, the shape, and the vibe to match your Mum. You can go calming, energising, or capture the feel of a day spa, then present it to her with a flourish and a card.

Make one for her space, or book a class together and enjoy a relaxing activity together.

11. Something indulgent (and practical)

At a skincare making class, your DIY gift for Mum can be a mini self-care kit, complete with products containing all-natural ingredients and divine scents you know she loves.

Or, you can bring Mum along. Spend a couple of hours mixing, testing, and generally feeling quite luxurious. When the class has wrapped up, Mum will have the know-how and recipes to keep making natural skincare at home. As will you, for future DIY gifts!

12. Flowers, with effort

There’s popping into Woolies and grabbing a quick bouquet for Mother’s Day, then there’s going to a flower arranging workshop, picking all of Mum's favourite flowers and building her a bouquet with intention. If you want to go DIY this Mother’s Day, this gift is one that marries tradition with meaning. Better yet, take the class together and walk away with matching bouquets.

13. A signature scent

Perfume is personal. Making it yourself makes it even more so. In a perfume class, you’ll blend notes to create a scent that’s completely unique, often using essential oils. No nasties, all natural and maybe even with a little hint of healing, this is the gift of perfume as you’ve never seen it before.

Craft a custom fragrance for Mum, or bring her along so she can design her own signature scent.

14. A Mother’s Day cupcake

A cupcake is small, but mighty. Add some buttercream and hand piped decorations, and you’ve got something really special on your hands. But, if you don’t have the skills to ensure both tasty and beautiful results, cake decorating classes will teach you how to pipe, frost and decorate like a pro. Expect an end result that’s almost too pretty to eat and full of that sweet, sugary goodness.

Make a batch for Mum or enjoy decorating baked goods together for Mother’s Day.

15. A do-it-yourself adventure

If you’re not sure what she’ll love most, let her choose. An experience gift card gives her access to all of the above and more. She can pick what suits her mood, schedule or curiosity, and choose to go solo or bring someone along.

Whether you’re shaping clay, pouring resin, piping cupcakes or picking up a paintbrush, DIY gifts will hold a special place in Mum’s heart. Not because they’re flawless, but because they’re yours.

And if you can turn the whole thing into an experience you share together? Even better. Because long after the candle has burned down or the flowers have faded, that time spent side by side is what she’ll remember.
