Nacre inlay, also called mother of pearl inlay, is one of China's traditional decorative arts. It involves processing the shells of molluscs such as conch, clam, and mussels into thin slices carved and assembled into patterns of flowers, figures, birds, and animals. These patterns are inlaid onto surfaces of objects such as lacquerware or wooden items.
The craft originated during the Shang and Zhou dynasties, became popular during the Tang and Song dynasties, and reached its peak during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Based on the materials used for inlay, nacre can be classified into two categories: hard nacre inlay and soft nacre inlay.
The craft reached its peak during the Ming and Qing dynasties and has continued to be passed down to the present day.
Through the meticulous polishing and finishing work of skilled craftspeople, mother-of-pearl inlay products exhibit brilliant lustre, fantastical colours and exquisite visual effects. By personally creating a mother-of-pearl inlaid brooch or hairpin, you can gain an appreciation for the elegant and luxurious artistic beauty found in the intricate inlaying process. Integrating this quintessential Chinese aesthetic into daily life can help us find moments of tranquillity and relaxation amidst the busy modern world, allowing you to reconnect with nature and cultivate inner peace.
This workshop focuses on a delicate, slow-paced craft process.
Participants will carefully break mother-of-pearl into small fragments and place each piece one by one to build a detailed design.
This is a patience-based activity that requires focus, steady hands, and attention to fine details.
The process can feel meticulous at times, but it is this careful, step-by-step work that creates the beauty of the final piece.
Please note before booking:
  • This is not a fast or hands-off activity
  • The process requires patience and concentration
  • Guests who prefer quick or casual crafting experiences may find this workshop demanding
  • As this involves close-up, detailed work, guests who usually wear reading glasses or require visual assistance are strongly encouraged to bring their glasses
This workshop is best suited for guests who enjoy detailed handcrafts, calm creative environments, and the satisfaction of seeing a beautiful piece come together slowly.
The workshop is also ideal for various group events. Our professional staff will work with you closely to devise a plan that suits your preferences and budget.
