Established as a creative response to the huge environmental problem of textile waste, ExMateria is a modern, sustainable, Scandi-industrial weaving studio, where we teach people to weave rugs on Nordic floor looms using upcycled/unwanted textiles.

Combining backgrounds in education and events, we offer Sydneysiders a unique opportunity to unplug and transform unwanted textiles into new items.

Both teachers have a current Working With Children Check.

The weaving workshop was great- not too difficult to follow, quite relaxing and meditative. Su and Anneli were friendly and patient teachers and the venue was easily accessible. I would highly recommend

Teacher's response

Thanks Holly, it was great to spend the day with you. Your calm and consistent approach paid off in a unique, beautiful rug. Well done & hope to see you again.

My sister and I had the best time, this is something we are interested in, such that we are following our fibre art passion. The teachers were so accommodating, relaxed, knowledgeable and were happy for you to take control of every aspect if you so desired, equally happy to help you along. There aren't many places in Sydney where you can experience working on a floor loom, so we were very excited for the day. There is no doubt you will walk away with a new skill and something that is useful. This skill can be applied to floor looms, table looms, hand looms - it's great to be able to get your mind into something worthwhile. Mine has been turned into a wall piece.

Teacher's response

Thanks so much Romy. We were impressed by both your energies and your 'no fear' approach to more complex weaving. It paid off with impactful 3-D effect rugs. Stay in touch about future weaving plans. :)

Hi my sister and I participated in the loom weaving class, we had a great time and came away with rugs we are both very happy with. The teacher Su was very knowledgeable and friendly, helping us make the best rug we could. The venue was very easily accessed from Redfern station only a couple of minutes walk and there was a cafe and IGA nearby where we were able to get food and coffee - we were doing the class on a Sunday so the fact that the cafe was open was great because we were able to get lunch there. The venue is in the old Locomotive store and is a very interesting building. The materials supplied were of very good quality and we were able to choose the colours that we wanted for our rugs and tweak the designs to our preferences. My only negative was the room was quite hot for me, to other people it might have been a perfect temperature, perhaps a standup fan in the room may have helped, as the air con was building controlled. Al in all my sister and I had a great time and I would highly recommend this class.

Teacher's response

Thanks for the great review Helen and your useful feedback. We were caught out by the hot weather, and you'll be happy to know we've followed up on the air con. Thrilled you enjoyed the rug weaving class and hope to welcome you back soon!

Both Annalise and Sue were great teachers and their instructions made it a breeze to weave my very first rug.
Great space to weave and loved working on an authentic handloom from Finland.
I love rugs and this class was a great experience to get hands on on the process.
On the plus side, all their Yarn is sustainably sourced.

I had a great experience weaving with Su and Anneli in their lovely studio. They are very creative. They work with different textures and materials and they bring weaving to the next level. I learned a lot from them and am looking forward to weaving with them again.

I took the class over 2 days in the evening rather than in a single day on the weekend, and after a busy day at work it was a great way to wind down and relax.

They supervised me every step of the way. They even let me stay longer to finish up my weaving and they didn't rush me and taught me how to complete it, even though it was an hour past the end time.

The studio was very nice and clean, with relaxing music playing. The looms were in good condition and they had plenty of colours or yarn to choose from for the designs.

I definitely recommend this class.
