Discover a fabulous new skill: blowing and sculpting glass in the flame! This beginner's class is taught by Glass Artist Mark Eliott. Mark will take you through the basics of glass blowing and sculpting in this two and a half-hour introduction in his Marrickville studio.

This two-and a half-hour taster session will cover:

  • The basics of glass blowing and sculpting using an "oxygen-propane" torch
  • Using both clear and coloured "borosilicate" glass rods and tubes (you'll learn various types at the workshop!)
  • Techniques such as sculpting, joining, stretching, blowing, and colour mixing
  • Safety talk on using the glass blowing torch
  • Half an hour of kiln time for your pieces to anneal.

You are using both right and left parts of the brain in this creative process which combines planning with improvisation. Students will come on a creative adventure with glass flame-work which balances technique, structure and improvisation.

You will make at least two glass objects that you can take home for your family and friends to admire, which could be a small glass animals, pendants, vessels or abstract creations; you might come away with several objects. The kiln will be turned off half an hour before the end of the class so that your creations can cool and be ready for you to take home at the end of the class.

Please note:
  • Bookings are unavailable for the first weekend of every month.
  • All public class dates are introductory taster sessions.
  • You can request a private taster session, as either introductory or ongoing skills.

Very experienced and patient Teacher, Mark with a friendly and knowledge Assistant Anna. It was amazing what we could learn and create in such a short space of time.

Thoroughly recommend it. Allow an extra 30 mins at the end for your artworks to cool in the kiln and read the instructions in your confirmation email re what to bring / wear.

Mark is an experienced glass making master, he taught us a lot of techniques in the 2.5 hours and gave us a lot of time and space to experiment with our creations. A really great first-timer “taster” session and even a bit addictive! I loved learning two glass making techniques in one sitting. It is one of the best experiences we’ve had in Sydney. I’d highly recommend it if you’re after something different and memorable.

Had a blast! Took my 74 year old Father as it’s always been a bucket list item for him. Mark was amazing! He was ever so patient towards my Dad (even when Dad was not following instructions ‍♀️).
I don’t have a creative bone in my body but found that I loved the whole experience. It didn’t matter that I didn’t know what I was doing. I found it quite meditative. My 5 year old loved my ‘abstract blob’ ha ha.
Venue was great ,materials supplied were ample and varied and Mark even had coconut water to offer us :)
Would definitely do it again. Thank you Mark!

Mark took time to explain the basic techniques (& safety practices) then we were able to begin experiencing this fascinating art by melting glass, adding colour, changing the shape of the object and using a variety of crafting tools. We had a great experience with Mark. The structure of the taster class is perfect for getting a sense of the studio environment, tools, materials and fundamental techniques.

There was plenty of time for a good introduction as well as experimenting with a variety of techniques.

Safety and hygiene (Covid etc) was well addressed too.

The taster class was a perfect introduction for me to the longer series of more advanced classes.

Mark is extremely welcoming and friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.

I would recommend this to anyone with any interest in the art.

Really interesting and a great selection of materials and tools.

Thanks Mark!

My wife and i had an amazing experience with Mark, He is such a lovely guy with alot of patients and a very calming manner which is exactly what you need when dealing with a hot flame and molten glass! He is very happy to throw you in at the deep end and that's what i liked most about the whole experience as no time is wasted getting creative.

I would strongly recommend this experience to anyone who is looking to try something totally new and doesn't mind a challenge!

Absolutely loved it
My husband and I were lucky enough to receive a Classbento gift card for our birthdays. And what better and more unique way to spend it then on a glass blowing class. You can really appreciate it as a diverse and intricate skill.

Mark the teacher has over 40 years experience, a true gentleman and very professional with a true passion for the glass medium.

Materials were provided and to a great quality, and you have plenty of opportunity and resources to really try out the skill in a low pressure environment. Mark just wants you to have fun and play around.

Tea and water are provided, location is roomy with plenty of room between yourself and other class mates, and good visibility in learning from Mark.

Book it in, you won’t regret it. Also check out the show “Blown Away” before you plan on going. The possibilities with glass are endless.

What a wonderful introduction to glass blowing and glass art. We were all a little nervous but Mark calmly took us through the processes and soon had us working with the glass rods, colour and flame. We each came away with two pieces of very unique art and a greater appreciation for the skill that these artists have. I've included a copy of my creations - definitely room for improvement! Venue was easy to locate. We arrived early and were able to enjoy a coffee and morning tea at a nearby cafe. The studio was set up well for us to easily get started at our own stations. An extra special "thank you" to Mark for being so patient and accommodating - we had to reschedule several times due to the floods and COVID.

Had a great class with Mark - he was very knowledgeable and also very patient. The class venue was quite easy to get to on public transport, and located in a building that seems to be a studio space for a lot of different creatives (woodworking, painting, pottery) that just adds to the atmosphere.

We had all the tools and materials we needed to create our little abstract objects, my favourite part of the class was blowing the glass for our vessels. Factor in an extra half hour or so to the class time as you'll need to wait for your glass to cool before you can take it with you.

Had a blast and will be booking another glass blowing class, this was an excellent experience.

Great class.

At first I thought maybe it was expensive, but I think its probably the most worthwhile creative taster class to do.

Mark is an incredible creative artist, and as a teacher he is very friendly and helpful.

Making something is difficult, but with managed expectations about a take home product, you might just suprise yourself and make something abstract to be proud of.

It was a challenging class but still achievable. Would love to go back and learn more.

Hilma Else Sep 2022

A very interesting, and somewhat challenging, experience, but a great afternoon's entree to the wonderful world of glass-making.
Mark was a very kind and solicitous teacher, instructing us with care and helping us when actually needed.
The experience left me wanting more, as my product at the end was rather minimal, though that was no doubt due to the fact that one cannot get any kind of facility with the materials in just two hours. However, we all made something to take home, some more worthwhile than others, but actually working with the glass was really interesting and much fun, if somewhat frustrating. The good thing is that one can often repair an error, accept it and develop what happens accidentally into something else, or always start again: all part of the learning process.
I thoroughly recommend this class to any who are interested to try it!

Thank you Mark for making our class a very memorable and enjoyable experience. Ellen

Mark is an excellent teacher, giving helpful tips and able to help without taking over your work. The first 30-40mins is safety instructions and a demo. Only thing that would improve the class is if it went for another 20-30mins as I think fitting in the two types of glassmaking was a bit tight! Otherwise I had an absolute blast of a time and really would recommend!

We had a private class with Mark for a birthday party, and Mark was professional & friendly, made the class super fun for all of us. He made sure we all understood the safety procedures and allowed us to be creative, but always there if we needed help. Highly recommend this for any beginners! We'lll be back for another class soon. Thanks again Mark!

I have been captivated and mesmerised by the power of fire and the fragility and beauty of glass my whole life. This was the perfect way to experience and explore them with a master of the art. Mark was wonderful sharing his skill and knowledge with us while encouraging us to be creative and courageous - working with the flame and led by the glass to find out what it wanted to be. 107 is such a welcoming, comfortable venue and the small group environment allowed us to be open and brave. Mark is a wonderful host, providing everything we needed including gorgeous glass, tea, advice, and great conversation. I can’t recommend this highly enough for a chance to relax, learn, play and connect with some of the most fundamental elements on earth. Thank you so much.

Mark was very friendly and created a warm and inclusive atmosphere! He taught us more than enough to get started, and then let us work creatively, providing assistance and advice whenever we needed. We had an absolute blast, and we got to keep our artwork after! 10/10 would recommend!

This was a great class. Went in not really knowing what to expect but it was fantastic. Mark was extremely knowledgeable and helped us every step of the way while still being able to have freedom to do what we wanted with the pieces. Would highly recommend.

The class was spectacular! Our instructor, Mark, was an absolute legend and had so much knowledge to offer. I never thought i would be able to create something so beautiful out of glass, especially in only 2 hours, but through his guidance i ended up with a little figure i am really proud to say i made myself. Would gladly recommend this class to everyone. It was truly a wonderful experience

Mark was absolutely wonderful and really friendly. The class was a great introduction to glass blowing and sculpting. I didn’t realise how much skill and practice goes into the art, something that I would love to continue learning more about in the future :)

Class was fantastic and really good fun, everything was provided and Mark was very helpful in showing us the techniques, safety and any on hand help we needed to make our pieces.

Mark is a great teacher and made everything simple and easy, we even had a chat after about some of his projects, which he was happy to go into detail about.

Really great introduction to the field and had a lovely evening with my GF.

Would definitely recommend!
