We thought we were only going there to do glass blowing but we also got to play with glass sticks. The teachers were knowledgeable and very helpful. The class was a good size and was fun to do!

Discover a fabulous new skill: blowing and sculpting glass in the flame! This beginner's class is taught by Glass Artist Mark Eliott. Mark will take you through the basics of glass blowing and sculpting in this two and a half-hour introduction in his Marrickville studio.
This two-and a half-hour taster session will cover:
  • The basics of glass blowing and sculpting using an "oxygen-propane" torch
  • Using both clear and coloured "borosilicate" glass rods and tubes (you'll learn various types at the workshop!)
  • Techniques such as sculpting, joining, stretching, blowing, and colour mixing
  • Safety talk on using the glass blowing torch
  • Half an hour of kiln time for your pieces to anneal.
You are using both right and left parts of the brain in this creative process which combines planning with improvisation. Students will come on a creative adventure with glass flame-work which balances technique, structure and improvisation.
You will make at least two glass objects that you can take home for your family and friends to admire, which could be a small glass animals, pendants, vessels or abstract creations; you might come away with several objects. The kiln will be turned off half an hour before the end of the class so that your creations can cool and be ready for you to take home at the end of the class.

FAQ

Would we be able to make an hourglass or is that too difficult? Also, I was wondering if we were able to record a few short videos of each other making the piece, or is that not allowed?
In a 2 hour Taster session, we would usually do an improvisational solid glass form then an improvisational blown glass form using colour and clear glass. Then we would do a basic planned project such as a pendant or a turtle. An hourglass could be done if I gave you a lot of help as this is a more sophisticated project. You are welcome to video it.
Can my daughter participate? She is 14 and very level headed.
The minimum age for this class is usually 12 and your daughter sounds quite responsible so she should be fine
