Glass Blowing Class for Beginners: Taster

Learn the fascinating art of glass blowing in Sydney

2 hours Class size 1 to 5

label $143 - $209 (or 4 payments of $35.75 - $52.25 Afterpay)
($209 per guest when you book for 1 guest, $176 for 2 guests, $165 for 3 guests, $154 for 4 guests, $143 for 5 guests)

Discover a fabulous new skill: blowing and sculpting glass in the flame! This beginner's class is taught by Glass Artist Mark Eliott. Mark will take you through the basics of glass blowing in this two-hour introduction in his Redfern studio.

This two-hour taster session will cover:

  • The basics of glass blowing using a "oxygen-propane" torch
  • Using both clear and coloured "borosilicate" glass rods and tubes (you'll learn various types at the workshop!)
  • Techniques such as sculpting, joining, stretching, blowing, and colour mixing
  • Safety talk on using the glass blow torch

You are using both right and left parts of the brain in this creative process which combines planning with improvisation. Students will come on a creative adventure with glass flame-work which balances technique, structure and improvisation.

You will make at least one glass object that you can take home for your family and friends to admire, which could be a small glass animal, pendant or abstract creation; you might come away with several objects. These creations will be finished and ready for you to take home approximately 40 minutes after the end of the class.

Please note:
  • Bookings are unavailable for the first weekend of every month.
  • All public class dates are introductory taster sessions.
  • You can request a private taster session, as either introductory or ongoing skills.
  • The class duration is two hours, however, for classes with more than four students, it may run slightly over at up to two and a half hours.

Knowledge required
Suitable for ages 12+ only when accompanied by a responsible adult. Minimum unaccompanied age 16.
What you'll get
You will make at least one object to take home that you can take home for your family and friends to admire. Whether that is a small glass animal, trees, flower or a small abstract creation, vessel or even wearable object.
What to bring
  • You must wear proper clothing - long sleeves and long pants from cotton or other non-flammable material. So no shorts or tees! Full covered shoes at all times and best to tie long hair back on the day.
  • You may like to bring water and a snack.
  • A container (such as a shoebox) to take your finished piece home after the class.
Suitable for

This is a fun indoor activity, suitable for adults, and kids (minimum 12 years old). An adult must accompany any attending kids, and must pay for a separate ticket.

This would also be a unique gift for her, gift for mum or anniversary gift.

Mark was very interactive, and happy to guide us through our creative experience, we felt at ease to have fun with the glass making which really helped! The venue was great, unfortunately we had a heavy rainfall but we were able to continue working through the odd raindrops finding it's way in. This class was brilliant. Mark is an excellent teacher with fascinating information about the history of glass and the science of the materials. The studio was perfectly set up for observing and making with everything you need. The time flew by and we came home with our creations to show our new skills. Thanks for an excellent introduction to glass blowing, we loved it.

Steven Patterson Nov 2021

What was the teacher like? Mark is very understanding - very positive and clearly a glass guru!
How was the venue? Venue was great! - clean facilities - covid aware - very happy
If materials were provided, did you like them? all materials were provided - more than we needed - everything you could want
Was the class good value for money? Hard to compare - what would a student of Leonardo or Michelangelo reply to the same question?
What did you do / learn? if I had been able to take it all in in the time - I could have learned everything there was to know! - it was great

Jeff Gibbs Nov 2021

A basic introduction but, after the preliminaries and demonstrations we only had an hour or so to our own thing which didn't feel like enough time.

Reply from this teacher:

Thanks for your feedback Jeff. I will look for ways to increase the amount of hands-on time in my classes. The reason the intro discussion seemed long was probably because I was waiting for everyone to arrive before I started the important safety talk and one person was a few minutes late. We talked about everyone's glass art/craft experience in the interim and I asked if everyone could stay a little bit longer to compensate for lost time and everyone seemed fine with that.

In the 2 hour "Taster" session, just under half the session is usually taken up with the intro, safety talk, sculpting demo and blowing demo because there is a lot of important information to convey in a short time. The only alternative I can see would be to make the sessions 3 hours instead of 2. This is great from the creative viewpoint but I'm not sure if people would be happy to allocate the extra time and cost. I am considering offering this as an option however, especially for larger groups which tend to stretch the timing anyway. Regards Mark.

Mia Bridle Jun 2020

Mark is a great teacher, who created a very pressure-free environment where we felt comfortable to learn, create and experiment with the art form, free from expectations. He gave us ample time to create on our own, as well as helpful instructions and kind feedback. We were surprised by how much we could learn and accomplish in such a short time, and we were happy to take home two pieces each.
We were provided with all the materials we needed, with many choices for colour of glass to use. The venue was a great creative space!
It was a private class with just the two of us, but we felt comfortable and encouraged with Mark as our teacher.
The class was definitely great value for money and we can't recommend it enough!

Catherine Morgan Jun 2020

A really enjoyable and fascinating intro to glass work! Mark is really knowledgeable and patient, and his love of introducing others to working with glass really shines through in his teaching. He demonstrates what you can do with the glass and then gives you free rein to play around and manipulate the glass into strange and fantastic shapes, with a huge amount of different sized rods and colours to choose from. Two hours flew by, and we're already thinking about when we can go back.

This course has been an absolute joy and I would definitely go for the 7 hour course next. Mark was super friendly , Informative and attentive instructor. The venue was somewhat straight forward to find and the waiting area was extremely comfy. There was someone playing the piano in a neighboring studio which made the experience at least 10% better as well as milk tea :) . This course was definitely worth the money considering I had a 1 on 1 for two hours with someone as experienced as Mark. During the class , I learned the fundamentals of glass work safety , glass lamp working and glass blowing. I made a two weird looking pieces but not too bad for 2 hours of learning.

We booked a private lesson as a 60th birthday present. All 4 of us, different age groups (from 30s-60s) had a wonderful time. We each took home over 4 pieces that we had made.
The class was fun but also informative.
After our lesson we had lunch then came back 45mins later to collect our pieces.
The venue was only 5mins from the train station and very easy to find.

Yuka Mochizuki May 2019

Lesson was super fun, really get to see glass in a new form - an artistic way. Mark was knowledgable and experienced, encouraged creativity. I got to create 3 glass pieces and took them home. Allow maybe 30 minutes after class since they need to be in the oven for while before taking it out! The venue is a little odd, since the doors are locked, but if you stand outside of the building near the door someone should come to you!

Glass Blowing Class for Beginners: Taster review by Yuka Mochizuki
Would we be able to make an hour glass or is that too difficult? Also, I was wondering if we were able to record a few short videos of each other making the piece, or is that not allowed?

In a 2 hour Taster session, we would usually do an improvisational solid glass form then an improvisational blown glass form using colour and clear glass. Then we would do a basic planned project such as a pendant or a turtle.

An hour glass could be done if I gave you a lot of help as this is a more sophisticated project.
You are welcome to video it.

Can my daughter participate? She is 14 and very level headed.

The minimum age for this class is usually 12 and your daughter sounds quite responsible so she should be fine
