Discover a fabulous new skill: blowing and sculpting glass in the flame. This beginner's class is led by one of the experienced glassblowers working at the Mark Eliott Glassblowing Studios in Marrickville, who'll take you through the basics over two and a half hours.
This taster session covers
  • The basics of glass blowing and sculpting using an oxygen-propane torch
  • Working with both clear and coloured borosilicate glass rods and tubes
  • Techniques including sculpting, joining, stretching, blowing and colour mixing
  • A safety briefing on using the torch
  • Half an hour of kiln time so your pieces can anneal
This is a creative process that balances technique, structure and improvisation — you'll be planning and reacting at the same time.
You'll make at least two glass objects to take home: small glass animals, pendants, vessels or abstract creations, and often more than two. The kiln is turned off half an hour before the end of class so your pieces cool and are ready to take with you when you leave.
Perfect for corporate team building — we can host groups of up to 22, with half the group blowing at a time. Groups over 11 need extra time beyond 2.5 hours, so get in touch and we'll build a plan for your team.

FAQ

Would we be able to make an hourglass or is that too difficult? Also, I was wondering if we were able to record a few short videos of each other making the piece, or is that not allowed?
In a 2 hour Taster session, we would usually do an improvisational solid glass form then an improvisational blown glass form using colour and clear glass. Then we would do a basic planned project such as a pendant or a turtle. An hourglass could be done if I gave you a lot of help as this is a more sophisticated project. You are welcome to video it.
Can my daughter participate? She is 14 and very level headed.
The minimum age for this class is usually 12 and your daughter sounds quite responsible so she should be fine

  • 5/5 from Theresa Knowles, attended Sep 2026: This class was fun and informative. Mark and Simi were great, they were patient, very helpful and knowledgable. I would recommend this class. I loved the small class size (my seession was only 4 people) this allowed for Mark to get around to everyone and help them. First Mark gave us a quick demonstration and safety lesson then we were able to 'play around' and get a feel for the glass. The second half was when we got to do actual glass blowing and that was quite fun. We got to take home the two pieces we made. Simi was running a glass bead making class of her own but when her class was finished she came over and hepled out.
  • 5/5 from Maddy Strachan, attended Sep 2026: Loved the class! So fun and interesting
  • 5/5 from Caroline Rothwell, attended Sep 2026: A wonderfully hands-on and engaging class. Thank you Mark for such generous knowledge sharing
  • 5/5 from Matt Gelabert, attended Sep 2026: Its quite a challenging craft but lots of fun! Mark is a patient, supportive and highly experienced teacher, did a great job explaining the basics and techniques and encouraging everyone to let their creativity flow
  • 5/5 from Wendy Strachan, attended Sep 2026: Our teacher Mark was just wonderful. He encouraged our artistic side and was a good source of ideas. As scary as the blow torch was, it was a lot of fun. My freeform attempt was a bit of a blob but my glass blowing created a beautiful water spike to water plants. I was so amazed with what I managed to make. Thanks again Mark, we really enjoyed your class. Maddy and Wendy
  • 5/5 from Matt Gurr, attended Aug 2026: I booked the class as a Christmas present for my partner with the aim of learning about an interesting craft together. The teacher Mark was great, incredibly patient and knowledgeable about his craft. We were able to try out glass sculpting and glass blowing. Whenever we got stuck Mark and his assistant were able to help us out and get us back on track, without taking away the fun of learning. Great class, highly recommended

  • 5/5 from Michael Tapper, attended Aug 2026: Great experience trying out glassworking with Mark! It seems such an intimidating material to work with, but Mark makes everything feel safe and exploratory. We took the taster course and walked away with a number of beautiful objects, both solid and blown. Even when things don't quite work as you envision, the results always seem to be lovely, simply because of the inherent beauty of glass as a material. Loads of fun and great even if you had no artistic experience. It's much more relaxing and creatively free than Blown Away makes it look, too. The way Mark teaches and the tools and materials are much more forgiving for first timers than the high pressure reality show.
  • 5/5 from Monica Lee, attended Aug 2026: Mark is a wonderfully encouraging, passionate teacher. We made 6 little gasswork sculptures over a few hrs, and I am so pleased! It was great fun!

  • 5/5 from Tracey Patterson, attended Jul 2026: Great demonstration then it was our turn to try basic glass sculpting and adding colours. Then it was time to try basic glass blowing. So after another explanation and demonstration we had a go. It was challenging however with a lot of support we were all able to leave with two glass objects. Overall it was a fun and laid back way to learn a very technical skill and I’ll be coming back for more.

I would definitely recommend this if you're feeling like exploring a new creative experience.

  • 5/5 from Michael Meadows, attended May 2026: We did the taster class as part of a special birthday weekend staycation in Sydney (5 adults aged 26 to 64). It’s an exciting, very hands on class. Everyone has their own flame, a full set of tools and lots of colours and materials to work with. We all enjoyed learning from Mark, he’s very calm, creative and supportive. The studio is filled with inspiring ideas and there are two other lovely teachers to ensure everyone has guidance where needed to complete their two works. We felt encouraged to be bold in our design choices. No rules or patterns to follow, just creative fun. We’ve come home with a fabulous collection of unique works of art. (shot glass, goldfish, vase, paperweight, fish tank decoration, beautiful shells and several abstract pieces that defy description…….in the best possible way). We all agreed we would do it again and recommend it to friends.
