Our Story – The Empowered Oven
The Empowered Oven was born from humble beginnings — and from a decision to stop hiding who I am. I don’t hide my disabilities anymore. I embrace them.
I’ve been a Culinary Chef and Pastry Chef for 29 years and counting. From a very young age, I learned that cooking isn’t just about food — it’s a way of life. It’s how you bring people together. It’s how you create happiness. My style is rooted in old-school methods, taught by seasoned chefs who built and ran their own restaurants. I believe in sourcing the best produce and respecting traditional techniques.
I live with ADHD, insomnia, trauma, and dyslexia. I’ve never quite fitted into the “normal” business structure. Like so many people with neurological disabilities, my brain is wired differently. We process information differently. That doesn’t make us incapable — it simply means we may need a little more time to understand and adapt. Unfortunately, that difference has cost me jobs.
In 2025, after losing yet another position, my health collapsed. I spent a month in hospital and was diagnosed with coeliac disease. Overnight, my entire world changed.
When I came home, I tried everything gluten-free I could find — and honestly, it all tasted like cardboard. So, I went back to what I know best: research, testing, failing, learning, and creating. I studied alternative flours and began developing my own recipes. It took five months to perfect a bread I was truly proud of.
By June, I started trading at markets. Customers told me they couldn’t tell the difference between my gluten-free products and traditional baking. That’s when everything clicked. I found my purpose. But this business is about more than food.
My son lives with six disabilities. His future under supported employment would have meant earning between $3 and $10 an hour, limited to just eight hours a week. That is not dignity. That is not living. So, I asked myself: why not build something better?
Why not create a company that celebrates disabilities instead of hiding them? That teaches differently, not harshly. That empowers instead of belittles. That helps people grow until they become better than me. The Empowered Oven exists to prove that people with disabilities are valuable, capable, and deserving of real opportunities.
We stand for empowerment. We stand for inclusion. We stand for a proper day’s pay for a proper day’s work. This is more than a bakery.
This is a movement.
