Introduction to the Potter's Wheel Workshop

Learn to throw pots on the wheel at this fun class in Sydney

2 hours Class size 1 to 4 (public classes), 4 to 5

label $145 (or 4 payments of $36.25 Afterpay)

Experience the potter’s wheel and learn how to make your own ceramics at this fun beginner’s throwing class at Clay Cartel in Marrickville.

This class is the perfect introduction for anyone wanting to have some hands-on experience working with clay on the wheel. You’ll learn everything you need to know about how to prepare clay, centre a ball of clay and throw different shapes using a potter’s wheel.

Classes include small groups of up to four people, so you get more personal attention from our teachers. The class will run for two hours and at the end of the class, you will get to pick two of your pots to leave at the studio to be fired and glazed with the glaze of your choice.

Your teacher will email you once the work is fired and glazed so you can arrange collection. Please note that from drying to final glaze firing takes three to four weeks.

You should wear casual and comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty as you’re guaranteed to get splattered with clay (don’t worry, clay washes out). Please ensure your nails are cut short and long hair should be either tied back or pulled away from the face. All of your materials and clay will be provided on the day.

I was excited yet nervous for the class but felt immediately comfortable and at ease once I got there. There was some nice relaxing music playing while others were working nearby in the studio. Our teacher, Shannon, explained the theory and processes clearly and was very patient and kind. I struggled at first with pulling but Shannon was very attentive and was able to help me understand what I was doing wrong. I appreciate her guidance and encouragement. I definitely had a lot of fun and look forward to seeing the completed pieces!

Great location, teacher and class. No idea how good my little masterpieces will end up, but it was enjoyable enough learning to make them. I’d consider doing another class one day, but am very aware this isn’t my strength.

Shelley was great Very friendly and moved at a comfortable pace and fun to learn from. She took notice of small things we needed help on and gave us guidance.

Venue was clean, tidy and cosy. The music was really chill too.

It was well taught ,going through the steps of throwing clay and enough practice to get comfortable. I would be confident approaching a potter's wheel alone now.
Can't wait to pick up our glazed and fired ceramics.

Thanks so much, from Asahi and Tanton

She let me also have a bit of time to myself when I was getting a hang of things, a nice balance :) She was encouraging and again, super helpful. Everyone in the studio was friendly. I recommend!

My sister and I enjoyed a wonderful introductory workshop to clay wheel throwing. Shinhee was an excellent and patient teacher guiding us through the process and providing support when needed. We were also given 20 minutes of 'free' time to create our own unique works. The small classes were excellent. During the workshop we each produced 6 clay pieces from which we could choose two works for firing and glazing. A fun and productive workshop - highly recommended!

I enjoyed this course, it covers all you need to know if you have never thrown on a wheel before, Very supportive teacher, helped us all to improve and create our homewares, ready for firing. Would have loved a take home sheet that set out the basics for beginners, as a reminder the next time we feel inclined to tackle some wheel work.

My wife and I had such a fun time out and we have learnt a lot from the throwing classes.
The studio set up is ideal for teaching so there was no time wasted and we got a full-on hands-on class with expert advice.

Thank you so much for having us over. We really managed to get an appreciation for the art.
