Learn how to whittle a cute timber animal in this fun and informative course.

5 hours

Class size 1 to 11 (public classes), 8 to 10
  $299 (Afterpay available)

Looking to try your hand at a woodworking class in Sydney? In this workshop, you will learn how to whittle under the guidance of an experienced whittler. Discover the basics of whittling, from safe practices to finishing touches, and leave with a unique creation to call your own.
What we'll cover:
  • Gain knowledge of general safety when working with whittling knives
  • Learn the basics of wood grain direction and different types of whittling cuts
  • Practice working with knives, perfecting finishing cuts, and using finishing oil
  • Understand safe whittling posture, proper knife care, and how to continue your whittling journey
All of our whittling classes cover the fundamentals of whittling, but each class type also helps to hone a different aspect of the craft.
  • Animal whittling gives more of an opportunity for whittling a larger piece of material and requires the most material removal of the 3 classes. All students complete 1 animal, many start on a second, and some make 2 items in a class duration. This class uses the largest pieces of timber and utilised pre-cut shapes to get you into the craft immediately.
  • Figurative whittling is focused on fine detail work. This class is about precision and a fine touch to achieve a proportioned, neat, and symmetrical figure. This class uses mid sized timber and offer pre-roughed shapes or blocks.
  • Ornament carving and decoration is about turning out several or a dozen small simple items from the block utilising no pre-cut shapes. This class is about carving what you want, and then utilising paint, stain, or oil to achieve a desired finish.
Don't worry if you're new to whittling – this workshop is a supportive environment where you can explore your creativity and develop new skills. By the end of the day, you'll have your own hand-whittled figurine and the confidence to keep carving at home. Join us for a fulfilling experience that will leave you inspired and proud of your accomplishment.
Note: This course is open to students 16 and older:
Students 16-17 years of age may attend a course without a parent or guardian present.

It is fairly open-ended with a workshop feel: you're given a bunch of options, and a run down of the key things you need to know, then you can choose your path, try out different approaches and different tools, and see where you get to. Nick was a great teacher with a wealth of knowledge to share, and very good at ensuring that everyone in the class got the support they needed. No prior knowledge or experience needed. Recommended!

Instruction provided to the group by our teacher Nick was clear and to the point, and then was tailored to each participant as we progressed at our own pace. There was a choice of what carving to begin with, and options were given for finishing as well. A very relaxing Sunday activity!

  • 5/5 from Emily Ng, attended Jul 2025: Super fun class, 5 hours flew by and I would have happily kept going. Nick was an awesome teacher. He was knowledgeable and calm and never got tired of reassuring us that we had not completely messed up our pieces. I loved that the class was small so we got 1-on-1 assistance from Nick whenever we needed. The wood and starting pieces provided were easy to pick up and use and I was pretty happy with my final piece. The workshop does get quite cold as the door stays open so make sure you bring a warm jacket! Overall, super fun experience. I could definitely see myself picking this up as a hobby!
  • 5/5 from Samantha Tse, attended Jul 2025: Nick was attentive detailed and encouraging with different choices and explorations in whittling, choosing between a womabt a dog the wood type the carving style the knife style etc
  • 5/5 from John Hayes, attended Jul 2025: Fun course, great instructor. Nick spent time with everyone and gave practical demonstrations of what to do (he must have a lot of partly completed animals at different stages of being carved so he can demonstrate what to do for different parts of the animal) Hint: start with the softwood, the rosewood looks nice but it's harder and more difficult to carve.
  • 5/5 from Kristen Dibbs, attended Jun 2025: My first whittling class today, Sat 28 June. This was an excellent class, very well prepared with information and materials. The pace was just right, all students seemed to be doing very well and pleased with their efforts. The teacher did a great job, and individual attention was freely given as required. Plenty of take home blanks available to purchase and continue the fun. I was very happy with my results. Thank you to my teacher. Kristen
  • 5/5 from Paul Ryan, attended Jun 2025: Nick was super clear in his teaching, and the projects we started with appropriate for my low level of confidence and skill.
  • 5/5 from K Beno, attended Mar 2025: This was a great class. The teacher Nick was patient and encouraging; he made sure that everyone had plenty of support to whittle. I enjoyed the class and am keen to keep whittling. There were different types of wood to try out and different knives and overall, it was a very positive experience.
  • 5/5 from Chris Armstrong, attended Mar 2025: The whittling class was great. The atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly. Our instructor was great. He was very positive and patient, allowing us to work at our own pace. I recommend it.
  • 5/5 from Amanda Deacon, attended Mar 2025: This was a fantastic course, and Nick was a wonderful instructor. He explained the tools and techniques very clearly, and gave a lot of one-on-one help all day. The group vibe was relaxed and friendly. I would definitely recommend this class to everyone!! The introductory animal for carving was a wombat, which I thought was a great choice by Nick. Wombats are naturally chunky animals, so our carvings all looked cute at each stage of development. There was also the option to carve other animals (or objects) at a variety of sizes from two or three different types of wood. There are some nice cafes nearby, but I'd advise people to pack a lunch if they'd like to eat something substantial without having to take too much time away to buy a lunch. Really amazing workshop, thank you Nick and the ATT team :)
  • 5/5 from Tahnee Barnes, attended Feb 2025: My partner and I recently attended a wood whittling class, and we absolutely loved it! From start to finish, the experience was engaging and enjoyable. Nick, the instructor, was phenomenal—10 out of 10! He was patient, knowledgeable, and really took the time to explain the techniques clearly. His passion for wood whittling made the class even more enjoyable, and we both felt encouraged throughout. We left feeling proud of our creations and excited to continue learning. Highly recommend this class to anyone looking to try something new or hone their skills!
  • 5/5 from Adrienne Zinn, attended Feb 2025: Teacher was fantastic, a professional, friendly helpful and engaging. I loved the relaxed vibe, sitting in a circle, carving away with the fans going. It was a great introduction class and I carved the wombat which ended up looking more like a rabbit haha. Took too much off the ears I think. I’m so excited for the carving your own mushrooms which will hopefully be added to the timetable soon.
  • 5/5 from Bruce Cech, attended Feb 2025: The teacher (Nick) was fantastic. Warm, friendly, extremely helpful. Having whittled previously you were shown all the basic skills you needed to carve a small animal (I chose to do a wombat). This was a fantastic course, I would absolutely recommend to anyone interested in getting started

Among the Trees is an ethical and sustainability based start-up for reclaimed timber located in Marrickville.
Saving timber from demolitions or other discarded uses and making it available to the public through a retail timber shop and woodworking classes. Accessibility to wood doesn't just mean being wheelchair friendly (which we are), it also means helping customers understand how to use and source reclaimed timber. To make it as easy as possible to work with, we offer custom machining and glueing, so the timber in our store can be squared, resurfaced and cut to specific dimensions. We also help empower individuals to have the confidence to undertake woodworking projects by offering woodworking beginners classes that are taught with simple hand tools.

Lumberyards and wood workshops can be intimidating sometimes, ATT is one of the few places that caters not only to architects, planners, homeowners as well as carpenters and tradespeople but also to customers that have little to no woodworking experience and are embarking on DIY and student projects or trying their hand at repair, renovating or building.
Our workshop at Among The Trees is set up to be the perfect space to learn about hand tools, reclaimed timber, and woodworking. We’ve been hard at work collecting, restoring and tuning all the tools required to learn woodworking, and a few extra ones as well.

All-in-all, everyone that is interested in wood is welcome!
