Japanese Art Kintsugi Ceramic Repair Workshop

Learn the Mindful Japanese art of golden ceramic mending to give new life to a damaged piece

4 hours Class size 8 to 10 guests

$150 ($100 per class surcharge applies for private classes)

Kintsugi is a century-old Japanese craft where broken ceramic objects are pieced back together using lacquer and gold dust based on the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi finding beauty in imperfection.
The process transforms much loved, worn items into a beautifully crafted, new piece of art. It is a chance to live a more sustainable way and to rescue objects which would otherwise be discarded.
In this relaxed, zero-waste workshop, you will learn the introductory technique of “Art Kintsugi” mending by following seven essential steps using modern accessible materials and bring home a piece of your own Kintsugi art.
Kintsugi, “Golden ceramic restoration” is a century-old Japanese art of repairing broken /cracked pottery using lacquer as glue to put fragments together.
The repaired item is then finished with the surface decoration of gold powder transforming it into a new piece of art when otherwise it would be thrown away.
Important note: this class is not recommended for pregnant women (due to some of the materials used).

  • 5/5 from Ben Shuker, attended Mar 2024: My husband and I had the pleasure of attending a Kintsugi class taught by Kawada Sensei this past weekend. This class was a wedding gift, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences we've had as a newly married couple. Kawada Sensei's expertise and passion for Kintsugi were evident from the moment the class began. She guided us through the process with patience and clarity, making sure we understood each step before moving on. Her teaching style was engaging and informative, making the complex art of Kintsugi accessible to us as beginners. The class was not just about learning a new skill, but also about embracing the philosophy behind Kintsugi - seeing beauty in imperfection and appreciating the history of an object. This resonated with us deeply and added a layer of depth to the experience. We enjoyed the class so much that we decided to buy a kit to continue practicing Kintsugi at home. We are excited to explore this art form further and create our own Kintsugi pieces. In conclusion, we highly recommend Kawada Sensei's Kintsugi class. Whether you're looking for a unique experience, a creative outlet, or a deeper understanding of Japanese culture, this class has something to offer.
