In this feature get to know Izumi Montgomery - artist and workshop facilitator for our Japanese 'Tsumami' Flower Accessory Workshop.
Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you started teaching the traditional Japanese craft ‘Tsumami Zaiku’?
I graduated with a Master's in Sculpture from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2008, primarily working with metal and fabric. When I moved to Sydney 13 years ago, I started to connect more with my Japanese identity and began using the traditional craft of 'Tsumami zaiku' in my small sculptures.
After becoming a mother, I made clothes for my baby, which made me more interested in fashion. I went to TAFE to learn about the fashion industry. There I realized how much waste is created by making clothes, so I went back to using 'Tsumami zaiku' to make upcycled accessories.
Around that time, I spoke with Joss, the production manager at 'The Social Outfit' (a sustainable fashion brand), and started using their scrap materials to teach 'Tsumami zaiku' brooch-making workshops.
How do you incorporate sustainable materials into the creation of 'Tsumami Zaiku' accessories?
Making clothes creates a lot of fabric waste, and these fabrics are beautiful. I don’t want to throw them away, even if they are small pieces. 'Tsumami Zaiku' is great for using these fabric scraps, and it’s a good way to upcycle.
What can participants expect to learn during the workshop?
You will learn two types of tsumami zaiku techniques, but in addition, you will explore the spirit of upcycling in relation to the history of tsumami zaiku in Japan. I hope you take this technique home and apply it in various ways!
Why do you think learning traditional craft like ‘Tsumami Zaiku’ is important in today's world, especially with a focus on sustainable materials?
In the world where we often buy and throw things away, I think it's important to use what we have to make something new. I love fashion and often make my own clothes. For example, I take old clothes apart and turn them into new outfits or bags. From the leftover pieces, I sometimes create matching 'Tsumami zaiku' earrings. This is what I learn from past Japanese cultures as well. I believe it’s good to do small things that help the environment, while also having fun and feeling happy about creating.
Learn the art of Tsumami Zaiku with Izumi in one of our upcoming workshops.
