Local artist and seasoned kite maker Tony Rice is welcomed in-store at Forager's Nest Art Space to demonstrate the playful art form of kite-making!
During this 2-hour session, Tony will be creating a "Japanese Spinning Top Kite" using inks, bamboo paper, and string. We invite onlookers to participate if they wish, or simply watch along to learn about Tony's particular process.
At the end of the demonstration, you are welcome to take home your completed paper kite, as well as the skills and knowledge to continue creating at home!
Suitable for teenagers and adults.
About the Artist:
Tony Rice has been a practicing artist for more than 30 years and a kite maker for 20 years. Starting his art career in Adelaide at the South Australian School of Art in the 1970s. As a potter and a kite maker, Tony found inspiration in the traditions of Japan. Working with kites came about as a direct response to the limitations of exhibiting his work in galleries. He has no limitations of space. So, the kite became the new vehicle for his painting and sculpture. Interacting with that great gallery in the sky, its characteristic wind, clouds, birds, sun, rain, and ultimate space, all viewed for free by the public.
He is a member of The Australian Kite Flyers Society and has become a major influence among Australian kite artists for his use of traditional Asian kite-making techniques and materials. Tony is an artist who has won national acclaim for his imaginative kites. He has represented Australia in the United States, Japan, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia.
