What you'll do

Learn the art of making unique Japanese inspired moss balls.

Kokedama has been around for centuries. It's a variety of Bonsai, consisting of petite plants living off a ball of special soil and moss, bound by string. You can hang them, feature them in bowls, let them stand 'naked', or do something more creative!

Perfect for beginners and people who like to get closer to nature and get their hands dirty, as well as those looking for something different to do. The Merchant & Green team will make it easy for you to follow along, and you'll be amazed by what you create with your own two hands.

You will make two Kokedama moss balls. With a variety of succulents or seasonal indoor plants selected by your teacher on the day. The class will run for approx 1hr. This is a great value and easy to follow class.

At the end of the class you can take your new moss balls with you, to style in your home. They also make an original gift for someone special. A Merchant and Green care card and carry bag is included. They're easy to take care of, and will bring a nice touch of greenery into any space.

Chris from Merchant and Green was a wonderful communicator prior to the event (as we had to email him regarding updates with class sizes and times) and also during the class. He was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and supportive. We had 14 girls in the class for a Bridal shower and all of them had a blast and would not stop talking about Kokedamas when we left. The shop was also set up nicely (with many flowers and products to look at) and all materials (including bags to take the kokedamas home) were provided. Would be back for more of his classes - would definitely recommend.

Had an amazing time at this class with my mum and my nan (three generations make three Kokedama!). There was a great selection of plants available and I really enjoyed experimenting with three different sized Kokedama. I attended this course in yesterday with my daughter and I really enjoyed my time here it was such a great hands on course. The teacher was really knowledgeable, friendly and patient. Merchant and green was in a great easy to find location with plenty of parking in nearby streets. Such an amazing florist with some really beautiful products/ gift wear/gifts to purchase. I thought that the course was great value for money and am glad that I finally got to attend (covid made me postpone three times) I will even purchase an online course for my mum i enjoyed it so much. Would definitely recommend !

The room was well set up on arrival, with aprons infont of each chair. We started on the making the small one with lovely teacher explaining each steps, then we moved to middle size which I enjoyed as we had learnt the techniques of how to do it now, then on the bigger one! Instructions card how to card n water given to us at the end. Highly recommend this class!

I did the Kokedama workshop on the 21st September at Merchant and Green Florist. It was a reasonable group of six persons surrounded with beautiful flowers and plants. An enjoyable and full of fun afternoon. The teacher (Orla) showed us how to make the Kokedama. And she patiently guided everyone of us to the end of the class, and answer any questions promptly.
I brought home different sizes of Kokedama with succulents and maiden hair.

My mum and I went to the Kokedama class at Merchant and Green on Saturday and we had the best time! Orla was our teacher and she was so lovely and talented. Very patient. It was definitely a wonderful experience. A member called me to check up on of whereabouts because we were running a little late by 10 minutes, so we are grateful for the wait. The teacher was patient and took the time to answer our questions and came by to help us.
The atmosphere was peaceful with customers coming in checking the classes and the store out.

I got this workshop as a gift for my hubby who loves gardening and was looking to learn more about kokedama. Chris was our teacher. He was friendly and warm and a good instructor. The tasks were sequenced well, in increasing difficulty and we felt confident with each new task. The materials we used were of great quality and we got to take home the kokedama we created. We had guests over the next day and they were super impressed with our creations!

Today, I spent a very pleasant morning learning how to make Kokedama balls under the guidance of Chris (assisted by Orla). Chris, our friendly teacher made us feel welcome. His instructions were clear, he was patient, he provided assistance when needed and he was positive in his encouragement of our efforts. We ended the class having each made 3 respectable Kokedama balls and with enough knowledge to make more on our own. All up it was a fun workshop.

Enjoyed this workshop very much. The venue was beautiful and very conducive to working with plants, being surrounded by them and also beautiful flowers. The teacher was knowledgable and had a supportive, easy manner. Everyone in class achieved a great result and I was very happy with the three Kokodamas I bought home. The skills are something that I will be able to use again and again on my own, but we were given some insider hints that made the whole process much easier. Located in a quiet and leafy street, this workshop was so much fun and set at a really leisurely pace. The morning didn't feel rushed and we were taught kokedama in a set of really easy to digest steps and were guided throughout the whole process. I absolutely loved this class - was a Xmas present for my mum who loved it too! Great location (the florist is beautiful, loads of all day parking and a great cafe next door!), really friendly teachers, small class size. Chris ( the teacher ) was fantastic my 8 year old granddaughter and I both loved this class. It was amazing value for money all the materials to make 3 kokedamas were supplied. It was such a cute venue too. Highly recommend this course to anyone who loves plants.

Had the best time in this class. The hosts were great, answered all questions and were so helpful. Everything we needed was included and we all left with 3 beautiful kokedama. Overall awesome time

The venue was a boutique flower shop in Surry Hills, the teacher a vibrant friendly human who made the Kokedama making fun and inclusive for all. Thank you for the wonderfully creative and mindful experience.

This workshop was so much fun and really relaxing. The florist shop was a great venue. Our teacher Chris was terrific and gave us a lot of encouragement. Pleased with what I had achieved. Would consider doing another course.

This was my first Class Bento workshop. I totally loved that we jumped in straight away and made our first Kokedama.
Our hosts were so helpful and friendly that my nerves disappeared within minutes.
The venue was beautiful and relaxing.
I’ll be joining more workshops here in the future.
A perfect way to spend a weekend morning.

Really enjoyable class to learn the basics of making kokodamas (moss balls). Small class numbers which allows a group dynamic and friendly interaction to be made. Highly recommend

Chris and Mitch were so friendly and inviting - they were wonderful teachers and hosts for the night. The shop was a beautiful intimate space with lots of pots and plants that we couldn’t help but buy too! The class was lots of fun and even the most uncoordinated were able to get the hang of it! We all walked away very proud of our kokedamo creations. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a fun hands on experience.

My sister and I bought the kokedama class for my Mum as a present. We all absolutely loved it. The Shop was beautiful with some amazing and different flowers and arrangements. The teachers were so lovely, and really know their stuff. They made the class so fun. All the materials were provided and were of a high quality. Would highly recommend this class. It has inspired me to go back and try some other classes with them!

This was an interesting class, something quite unique. Chris was very patient and showed and explained the technique well. Great choice of materials and good value. The venue is small but is great being surrounded by colourful, perfumed flowers, plants.

The Kokedama class is a great workshop to be had with friends. Chris and the Merchant and Green team (thanks Chris & Georgia!) are very welcoming and friendly. Very good value, a great experience to laugh and relax and walk away with beautiful plants. Perfect for beginners and everything is provided. The Bondi location is a great location and beautiful store. Highly recommend!
