Welcome to linocut printmaking! This process involves carving intricate designs into linoleum blocks, applying ink to the carved surface and then transferring the design onto paper or other mediums through a printing process.
In this class, you will learn the fundamental techniques and skills needed to create your own linocut prints. Through expert instruction, demonstrations and hands-on practice, you'll gain a deep understanding of the linocut process, from design conception to final print.
Under the guidance of an experienced instructor, students learn how to handle carving tools effectively and safely to create detailed designs. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced artist, this linocut class offers a structured and nurturing space to enhance your skills and expand your artistic horizons and create your one-of-a-kind print.
By the end of the linocut class, you will have a solid foundation in linocut printmaking that you can continue to build upon in your artistic journey.
What will be covered in this linocut printmaking workshop?
  • The class begins with an introduction to linocut printmaking and will include a brief introduction to how to correctly and safely use the tools.
  • You will be guided through the process of designing your prints, learning how to transfer your design onto the linoleum block (taking into account the reversed image that will result in the final print).
  • You'll be taught how to create different marks using various tools. Learn how to create lines, textures and details by carefully removing sections of the linoleum block.
  • Learn how to ink your carved linoleum blocks.
  • Discover how to properly register your linoleum block with the paper to ensure accurate printing.
  • Hand-printing techniques where you will learn techniques to achieve consistent pressure, ensuring clear and well-defined prints.

  • Closed-in shoes required
  • Please wear old clothes and/or bring an apron
  • Long hair must be tied back

Ro Cook has extensive experience in art and design. Under the label ROKOCO, Ro creates hand-printed product ranges including tea towels, napkins, table runners, aprons and cushions. She's spent many years as a production designer and lecturer in production design for television and film, as well as event design.
Ro is a passionate educator and tutor in Fabric Printing and Relief Printing on Paper at Sydney Community College.
Ro's teaching style is very hands-on. She enjoys guiding and supporting students to experience and experiment with many techniques. Her classes are about learning the rules, then breaking them. Good humour is encouraged in the classroom environment.
