Mother's Day Traditions Around the World

Mother's Day Traditions Around the World

By Tiffany Fung

When it comes to choosing meaningful Mother’s Day gifts, it’s easy to stick to what you know—but around the world, people celebrate Mum in beautifully different ways. While flowers, cards and sweet treats are always a safe bet, exploring global traditions might just inspire a more thoughtful (and memorable) way to celebrate this year.

Read on to discover Mother’s Day traditions around the world today and pick up a few heartfelt ideas you can borrow along the way.

A royal connection in the United Kingdom

In United Kingdom, Mother’s Day is known as “Mothering Sunday” and has roots that go back to the 16th century. Originally, it was a religious tradition where people would return to their “mother church” during Lent. Over time, it evolved into a day focused on family—especially mums.

These days, it falls three weeks before Easter and is typically celebrated with flowers, cards and a proper Sunday spread. Think roast lunches, afternoon tea and long catch-ups with family and friends. It has a cosy, nostalgic feel, where you can slow down and spend quality time together.

Big gestures in the United States

In the United States, Mother’s Day as we know it today really took off. Celebrated on the second Sunday in May, it’s a big deal—cue packed brunch spots, bouquets everywhere and plenty of thoughtful gifts.

The tradition was popularised by Anna Jarvis in the early 1900s, who wanted a formal day to honour mothers. Ironically, she later became critical of how commercialised it became—but that hasn’t stopped people from going all out.

From spa vouchers to jewellery to heartfelt handwritten cards, it’s all about making Mum feel special (and maybe giving her a break from cooking for the day).

Thoughtful simplicity in Japan

In Japan, Mother’s Day is also celebrated in May, but the vibe is a little more understated and deeply sentimental.

Red carnations are the traditional gift, symbolising purity, love and endurance. Children often draw pictures of their mums or write heartfelt messages, and it’s common to prepare a home-cooked meal rather than go out.

It’s less about big, flashy presents and more about genuine appreciation—something that feels quietly powerful.

A lively celebration in Mexico

Mother’s Day in Mexico is a full-on celebration—and it always happens on May 10, no matter what day of the week it falls on.

The day often starts with “Las Mañanitas,” a traditional song performed for mums—sometimes by live musicians or enthusiastic family members early in the morning. From there, families gather for big, lively meals and spend the rest of the day enjoying each other’s company.

It’s vibrant, energetic and full of love—perfect inspiration if your mum prefers a celebration that feels more like a party.

A multi-day festival in Ethiopia

In Ethiopia, Mother’s Day is part of a larger celebration called Antrosht, which takes place at the end of the rainy season (usually in October or November).

This isn’t just a one-day event—it can last several days and centres around family reunions. Children often return home with ingredients to cook a traditional meal together, and there’s singing, dancing and storytelling.

It’s less about gifts and more about connection, shared history and celebrating the role of mothers within the whole family.

A family-focused fête in France

In France, “Fête des Mères” is celebrated on the last Sunday in May (unless it clashes with Pentecost, in which case it shifts to June).

Children often give handmade gifts or write and recite poems at school. Families typically gather for a meal, and mums are the undisputed guests of honour.

Honouring a queen in Thailand

Mother’s Day in Thailand is celebrated on August 12, which is also the birthday of Sirikit.

This gives the day a national and cultural significance beyond just family. Jasmine flowers are the traditional gift, symbolising a mother’s unconditional love, and there are public ceremonies, candlelight vigils and community events.

It’s a beautiful blend of personal appreciation and national pride.

Modern traditions in India

In India, Mother’s Day is a relatively modern celebration, largely influenced by Western culture. It’s observed on the second Sunday in May and is especially popular in cities.

Gifts, dining out and flowers are all part of the mix, but there’s also a strong emphasis on spending time together—whether that’s cooking for Mum or simply being present.

It’s a newer tradition, but one that’s growing quickly and being embraced in unique ways.

A familiar feel in Australia

Here in Australia, Mother’s Day falls on the second Sunday in May and blends a bit of everything.

Chrysanthemums are the traditional flower (thanks to the “mum” in the name), and it’s common to start the day with breakfast in bed. Cafés and restaurants fill up quickly, and gifts range from flowers and candles to experience-based presents like creative workshops or spa days.

It’s relaxed, heartfelt and often centred around quality time—whether that’s a beach walk, a long lunch or trying something new together.

A shared sentiment, different expressions

What’s so lovely about looking at Mother’s Day traditions around the world is seeing how the same feeling—gratitude for mums—can show up in so many different ways.

In some places, it’s loud and celebratory. In others, it’s quiet and reflective. Some focus on gifts, others on time together. But at its core, it’s always about recognising the care, effort and love that Mums give every day.

If you’re looking for inspiration for Mother’s Day gifts this year, why not borrow an idea from another culture? You could keep it simple with handwritten notes like in Japan, go all out with a festive meal like in Mexico or focus on meaningful time together like in Ethiopia.

Because at the end of the day, the best gift isn’t about how much you spend—it’s about making her feel seen, appreciated and loved.

And that’s something every tradition gets right.
