Looking for unique Sydney activities? Join Tomato Art at our Burwood pottery studio and learn the art of wheel throwing.
This hands-on, beginner-friendly pottery workshop will see you making a unique ceramic piece to take home. The class runs for ninety minutes with a friendly instructor guiding you the whole way. You'll start with an introduction to pottery and the wheel before learning to throw a ceramic cup or bowl.
After class, your piece is dried and fired in our kiln, and is ready to pick up about 5 weeks later.
You'll go home more confident on the wheel, with the skills to keep your pottery journey going.
Good to know
  • Please take a photo of your work before you leave the studio — we use it to identify your piece at collection, so no photo means no collection.
  • We don't contact guests when pieces are ready, and our opening hours vary, so please message us before coming in.
  • Work is held at the studio for up to 4 months. After that it's discarded.
  • You can add an extra glazing or painting session after class for an additional fee.

It was such a fun and unique date experience, and getting to make our own pieces on the wheel made it even more special. A huge thank you to our instructor who was so patient, encouraging and lovely throughout the class. She made the whole experience fun and enjoyable, even for complete beginners! She saved me a couple of times! We laughed, got our hands covered in clay, and came away with some very memorable creations. Definitely an experience we’ll remember. Highly recommend Tomato Art for a fun, creative and memorable date!

I like watching the clay spin around on the wheel and also the feeling when I was able to mold it into certain shapes. As a first-timer it was a fun experience and I think it’d be a really cool skill to master the art of pottery.

  • 2/5 from Brendan David, attended Aug 2026: Teacher showed up 15 minute lates then rushed through a brief intro. Didn’t offer as much help as hoped and then ended session getting people to wrap up 10 minutes before 12pm to get class finished right on time. Overall quite disappointed in the experience even though it was fun. I’d do it again but at a different studio that wasn’t so crammed.

She took us through the stages really clearly, and I think everyone ended up with something cute (though some needed her help to make something). The only thing I would say is that I think you should mention in the booking that it would cost extra to get the pieces glazed. It wasn't much extra, but would be nice to know before you went.
  • 5/5 from Lia Murray, attended Jul 2026: Very fun!! The teacher was very nice and helpful!!
  • 5/5 from Amaarah, attended Jul 2026: Teacher was very friendly, good vibes all around. Received help from teacher and details were extensively provided. Learned about pottery basics and how to work the machine.
  • 4/5 from Susan Attard, attended Jul 2026: Teacher was knowledgeable but spoke very quickly, and the amount of noise in the room meant some things were missed. There were too many people in the class, making the room loud and the seating was squashy. Twenty people in the room was way too many.
  • 4/5 from Ruby Kan, attended Jul 2026: Teacher is very engaging. Its a great beginners class. Just dont expect to make your own piece cause you may not. The teacher will help make a piece for you though
  • 5/5 from Zijin Ding, attended Jun 2026: Good experience with clay
  • 5/5 from Alexis, attended Jun 2026: Our teacher was very good and patient with the group. We could make a bowl or cup. Most of the class needed help at some stage but our teacher patiently helped all of us. My favourite thing was seeing the finished bowls and cups
  • 5/5 from Tam Marney, attended Jun 2026: Took my kids to this pottery class, they loved it. Teacher was very patient and helpful. Would definitely come again.
  • 4/5 from Eustacia Karunalia, attended Jun 2026: Great beginner class! You'll learn lots about the basics of pottery and leave with a nice body of work :)
  • 4/5 from Imanya Attieh, attended Jun 2026: Was Super fun!!! We went for a girls night and had the best time. Only thing is that it felt a little bit too short… next time we’ll book for a longer session if they have one! Definitely recommend
  • 4/5 from Liesl, attended Jun 2026: The teacher was very good at explaining the steps. Teacher also spent as much time as necessary to help you work on your piece. Good small class size made the activity enjoyable.
