Learn how to wheel throw and make your own ceramics on the wheel!

6 x 2 hours - 2.5 hours Location Crows Nest Class size 1 to 7 guests   $485 - $545 (varies by date) (Afterpay available)

We offer a wheel throwing course that is suitable for beginners or as a next step if you have completed a course and are keen to learn more and be guided by a teacher. We have two options; 2 hour or 2.5 hour sessions over six weeks. Our courses are up to seven customers and we are hands-on!
2 hour sessions - we cover centering clay, making cylinders for cups, using a batt to make small plates and bowls, trimming and carving your work, adding handles and glazing with brush on and dipping glazes.
2.5 hour sessions - we cover centering clay, making taller cylinders, using a batt to make larger plates and bowls, making a lidded vessel, trimming and carving your work and glazing with brush on and dipping glazes.
We offer all course customers a complimentary 2 hour session to complete any glazing on bisque work that wasn't fired by week six.
Please note the below.
We offer a complimentary glazing class once the course is complete to finish glazing any ceramics that have not been fired by week 6. You will still be trimming in week 5 and in cooler weather or if you pieces are thicker they will take longer than a week to dry before we are able to fire them safely. This process is explained in detail in the course. The complimentary class is not on the same night as the course as we have separate times for this and a booking system for customers.
You must be able to attend all classes, if you are unwell, travelling or unable to attend for whatever reason we do not offer a make up class, you do have the option of paying for an additional class which we run on Monday evenings for $65.00

  • 5/5 from Anna McKey, attended Aug 2026: I had a wonderful time during this pottery course and couldn’t recommend enough! It was challenging in the best way and so fun. Leia is such a skilled and friendly teacher.
  • 5/5 from Naomi Rechter, attended Aug 2026: Highly recommend Klaypots throwing class. Leía is a great and patient teacher even when it’s clear pottery isn’t someone’s natural skill! Loved that after each class we realised that for over two hours we had not thought of work or life - just focused on what we were doing.
  • 5/5 from Pip Glinn, attended Jul 2026: New hobby unlocked! I had so much fun getting to grips with the pottery wheel, and couldn't recommend it more! 2 hours every week vanished in a very fun blink of an eye Leia was so knowledgeable and patient - even when I'm pretty sure I made the same mistake every session. I especially enjoyed being able to see the progress of my pieces from week 1 to 6 Thank you!
  • 5/5 from Eden King, attended Jul 2026: This class was so much fun and quickly became the highlight of my week. We worked at a great pace, came away from it confident in the skills we had learned, and left with pieces that we're proud of. Leia was a great teacher and had a really calming energy. Would definitely recommend this studio!!
  • 5/5 from Zoe Ashworth, attended Jul 2026: This course was so much fun and I enjoyed every minute. All the teachers were delightful, and knowledgeable and they really helped make learning this new skill very enjoyable :)
  • 5/5 from Joanne Choi, attended Jul 2026: The klaypots wheel throwing beginners course was an activity I was contemplating for a while. When i bit the bullet to finally start I regretted not starting sooner! I had the pleasure of meeting Karina, Leia and Caroline through the course and whether it’s from the demos or hands-on instructions: They all have such an extensive knowledge and skillset to share proactively. The studio is very local and accessible and has a warm atmosphere (especially when the kiln is on) and is well lit with natural light. The pace of the classes was consistent and I felt like there was progression in skill every week. The course has really fuelled a passion to upskill and explore more techniques and clay forms. I can’t wait to book my next course!
  • 5/5 from Brette Blakely, attended Jun 2026: Always a great experience at Klaypots! This was a next steps course for me and was fabulous extension of my skills from the beginners course. Got to handle more clay and gain new skills and confidence.

  • 5/5 from Heather Bunting, attended Apr 2026: The studio is a fabulous, welcoming space. Karina clearly and carefully explained the processes and techniques to create our pieces, patiently helping out when things go a little wobbly! The small group size is great as everyone is able to receive individual assistance when needed. I could happily spend an entire day there!
  • 5/5 from Kate Spencer, attended Apr 2026: I had the absolute best time in this class. Karina was so patient and was always coming to see if I needed any help. Only having 6 people in the class meant most of the time was hands on, Karina was able to demonstrate and then everyone got to get in and she would help us individually. Im looking forward to picking up my pieces in a few weeks!

  • 5/5 from Procopio Family, attended Feb 2026: This was a family Christmas gift and such a wonderful idea. Although we were worried about a family of 4 including 2 adult children committing to a week night course, it became our routine for an early local family dinner and then lots of fun, laughs and messy creations afterwards. We are looking forward to one more class and collecting our family pieces. Laya was an excellent teacher. Extremely warm and kind and patient. We would love to do more!

I repeated the 6 week course which was so worthwhile, it really helped build momentum and deepen my understanding of wheel throwing. Leia is a fantastic teacher. Super patient and encouraging, and she explains everything so clearly while making it all look effortless. The atmosphere was always relaxed and welcoming, with a great group of people which was a lovely bonus in addition to regular creative time! I think what I enjoyed most second time around was feeling my skills improve weekly and leaving each class feeling inspired to keep going and eager for the next session.

Leia is an amazing teacher- she gave individual attention to every single person in the class and expertly guided us through every step. The studio itself is beautiful and spacious. I wholeheartedly recommend Klaypots! 10/10
  • 5/5 from Chris Ortiz, attended Aug 2025: Did the Beginners Pottery Class over the past 6 weeks and it was so much fun. The class size of only 6 means we got lots of instruction from our great instructor Leia. We kicked off with the fundamentals - Kneading the clay, then we threw our first pots (these were then sliced in half to examine the thickness of the Base and Walls). Week 2 saw us throwing in anger - learning how to make plates and bowls. These were our first masterpieces of spun mud :) Over the forthcoming week we learnt how to Trim, More Throwing and lastly how to Glaze. We no wait for the pieces to be fired. Can absolutely recommend this course if you like doing things with your hands, don't mind getting a little Muddy, having fun and need a release for your Creative Juices. THANX LEIA and KLAYPOTS
  • 5/5 from Naomi Gurr, attended Aug 2025: Amazing class, Karina and Leia are hands on in their instruction, allowing you to learn and grow your skills.
  • 5/5 from Alexandra Sherbon, attended Aug 2025: This 6 week beginner course was a great introduction into pottery. I had started to develop a keen interest in pottery and this was a great first step. Our teacher Caroline was super knowledgeable, and had a knack for explaining things in a super simple way. She made the lessons a nice chill, judgement free environment. You start by learning the basics - centring and throwing (with no pressure to keep the pieces). You then go through all of the stages, throwing and trimming take up the bulk of the lessons. You then do glazing at the very end. I felt like I learnt a lot and I’m going to do the next course when there is availability. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone interested in getting started in pottery.
  • 5/5 from Edward Jansson, attended Jul 2025: Klaypots wheel throwing beginners course is great introduction to pottery. • 5/5 from Kimberley Bainbridge, attended May 2025: I can’t recommend klay pots studio enough! I had so much fun on this course and was with such a lovely bunch of girls and teacher. If I was staying in Sydney longer I’d do it all over again! I felt the course was very thorough and we got to make a variety of different things, by the end I felt very confident using the wheel and leia was very helpful when things went wrong. If you’re thinking of doing a course just do it! You will not regret it! :)
