What you'll do
Who knew Sydney’s best guided meditation session also results in learning how to make a wooden spoon? Join carver Brad van Luyt to learn about the meditative and joyful process of carving spoons and other implements from timber that would otherwise be considered weeds.This short wood carving workshop covers carving and finishing a wooden spoon by hand, as well as the sustainability impacts of a range of materials. Start with a pre-prepared green wood blank and spend the entire three-hour class carving which can be done seated or standing. You'll find the experience quite relaxing and meditative.By the end of this woodwork spoon carving course, you should have:
- Appreciate the value of second-hand timber and green wood
- Understand the structural properties of timber
- Safely and effectively use a variety of carving hand tools
- Understand spoon carving terminology and tools
What you'll get
- A finished, hand-carved, timber spoon
- Knowledge on timber grain and how to carve more spoons in the future
- Knowledge on how to sustainable source timber from woody weeds helping our native environments in the process
- Knowledge on how to safely and effectively use a number of spoom carving tools
Knowledge required
- This workshop is aimed at people with no experience with woodwork. It is open to anyone 18 years and over.
- The course is run using entirely hand tools so you need to be aware that there is an element of physicality involved.
What to bring
- You are encouraged to bring your own facemask, or one can be bought from Among The Trees.
- Protective eyewear and ear protection is able to be borrowed during the class. Any borrowed PPE needs to be sanitised after use.
- You are required to wear closed-toe shoes.
- Please wear clothing that can get dirty (e.g. sawdust will be present). - Long hair needs to be tied back and no loose hanging jewellery should be worn.

I’m so pleased I took the class as I learned so much in 3 hours of face-to-face instruction. It was well worth doing and I can recommend it to anyone starting out. Brad is a great instructor and provided all knives and materials required. He provided a spoon blank for each of the seven students, which he had made from newly felled woody weeds he had cut out of the forest just the previoust day. So much easier to work than the seasoned timber I have been using. He told us much about the woody weeds that infest our forests. Thanks to Among The Trees for providing the venue and organising the class. Maybe there is interest in a more advanced course in wood carving in which case I would definitely be a starter. I’m attaching photos of my spoon wich I have finished since the course a few days ago.

Among the Trees is an ethical and sustainability based start-up for reclaimed timber located in Marrickville. Saving timber from demolitions or other discarded uses and making it available to the public through a retail timber shop and woodworking classes. Accessibility to wood doesn't just mean being wheelchair friendly (which we are), it also means helping customers understand how to use and source reclaimed timber. To make it as easy as possible to work with, we offer custom machining and glueing, so the timber in our store can be squared, resurfaced and cut to specific dimensions. We also help empower individuals to have the confidence to undertake woodworking projects by offering woodworking beginners classes that are taught with simple hand tools.  Lumberyards and wood workshops can be intimidating sometimes, ATT is one of the few places that caters not only to architects, planners, homeowners as well as carpenters and tradespeople but also to customers that have little to no woodworking experience and are embarking on DIY and student projects or trying their hand at repair, renovating or building. Our workshop at Among The Trees is set up to be the perfect space to learn about hand tools, reclaimed timber, and woodworking. We’ve been hard at work collecting, restoring and tuning all the tools required to learn woodworking, and a few extra ones as well. All-in-all, everyone that is interested in wood is welcome!
