School Holiday E-Waste Tinker and Robot Build Workshop

A class for kids to make vintage science fiction-inspired robot costumes using reclaimed materials

8 to 13 years     6.5 hours Class size 1 to 20 guests

  $65 (Afterpay available)

Armed with some basic tools (screwdrivers, pliers and wire cutters) and a little know-how, the children will be encouraged to gently and safely pull things apart to see what’s inside discarded electronics. We will look at machines across the eras and talk about changes in technology today, focusing on why these are valuable materials. While taking the devices apart, we will look at how they work, observing any physical mechanisms and making guesses about how information is relayed through motherboards and wires.
We will sort through the materials to find pieces that can be used in our afternoon creations. Working with cardboard and reclaimed plastics, students will make simple costumes inspired by vintage science fiction robots. We will practice joining methods such as tabs, lacing and reusable closures, but use traditional adhesives to securely adhere when needed.
This Sydney class is suitable for ages 8 to 13 years. It will be a jam-packed day of activities where students explore e-waste, practice design skills and build their very own robot costume or statue to take home. There will be a break for lunch and students are welcome to take snack/water breaks as needed.
Note: This is a structured workshop and may not be suitable for all children. Children with poor dexterity may find the use of tools frustrating but are welcome to come along and practise. Children will be partnered with another child in some situations; if this does not suit your child, please choose another workshop.

The facilitators seemed lovely and it's a really great setting and values generally.

  • 5/5 from Xi Liu, attended Jan 2025: We were thrilled with the robot-making class at Reverse Garbage! The class focused on encouraging creativity while guiding kids through the process of deconstructing machinery and rebuilding it. My kiddo had so much fun, and we would definitely do it again!
  • 4/5 from Ylana Magni, attended Jan 2025: Teacher was good- they explained the activity very well. We got to build robots
  • 4/5 from Keg de Souza, attended Jan 2025: It was cool we built the robots but I wish we could have moved them around I liked the teacher The place was cool Probably taking it apart was the best cos the building was frustrating cos of one kid as he didn’t help and said some rude words and stuff
  • 3/5 from Olga Dubs, attended Jan 2025: Expected it to be more educational but it was based more as a creative class, building out of recycled materials (boxes, containers, craft paper etc). Children were given an electronic item to be pulled apart but no instructions were given as what can be restored or what circuit boards consist of. It was still a great day but different to what we expected.
