Sydney's most-loved vegan Indian cooking class — 500+ five-star reviews
This isn't vegan food built around fake meat and processed substitutes — it's the real, traditional plant-based cooking that's been part of Indian kitchens for generations. Bhavna Kalra Shivalkar has spent over a decade showing Sydneysiders that Indian vegan food doesn't need to imitate anything. Lentils, vegetables, rice, and spices, cooked properly, are the whole point — not a stand-in for meat.
This four-hour, fully hands-on class has you cooking side-by-side with Bhavna, learning the techniques and stories behind each dish, drawn from her own upbringing in Mumbai. She also runs Sydney's popular Little India food tours in Harris Park — so what you're getting is authentic, generations-deep knowledge of vegan Indian cooking, not a Western reinterpretation.
You'll cook a six-course, entirely plant-based feast, made from whole ingredients only — no mock meats, no processed substitutes, nothing standing in for something it isn't. Just dals, vegetable curries, rice, and bread, built the way Indian households have always made them.
Dishes typically include:
Protein – Pindi Chole (chickpea curry) or Rajma (kidney beans)
Lentils – Methi Dal or Dal Fry
Rice – Lemon & Peanut Fried Rice or Corn Pulao Or vegetable pulao
Vegetable – Mushroom Korma or a seasonal vegetable curry
Breads - Pooris OR Parathas
Raita – Corn OR beetroot Raita

  • 5/5 from Debbie Tschepen, attended Mar 2026: I gave my husband a voucher for this course as a gift. We both loved it! Bhavna was so warm and welcoming. She creates a calm and laid-back environment for her guests. It was more like lunch with friends than school. We learnt and practiced some great tips, tricks and techniques. The food was absolutely delicious. I’ll definitely be trying the recipes and techniques at home. Would highly recommend!
  • 5/5 from Heidi Hayden, attended Mar 2026: We had a wonderful time with Modern Desi! Our teacher was incredible and so knowledgable. All the vegan food we made was delicious and we came away inspired to make more.
  • 5/5 from Peter Kidby, attended Jul 2025: A great class superb teacher so knowledgeable and engaging culminating with a fantastic meal
  • 5/5 from Khonkhammy Bill, attended Jan 2025: The teacher made the whole session an incredibly engaging experience. It was a very intimate session with only 4 participants total, so you really felt like you learnt a lot in a comfortable environment. The food was also delicious and definitely inspired us to try some of the recipes again at home!
  • 5/5 from Andrew Farlow, attended Aug 2024: The class was informative and fun. Bhavna is a fantastic teacher who ensured everyone in the class was engaged throughout the session. We prepared a range of dishes, all of which were authentic Indian meals with complex flavours whilst at the same time easy and quick to cook. Vegan Indian food at its best!
  • 5/5 from Ron Zwiers, attended Dec 2023: Had a great time together with my daughter. Loved the 7 vegan courses Bhavna taught us to cook. Though Indian food and spices are not new to us I really got new information on specific combinations and use of different types of oil. Also will definitely try to make my own yoghurt and dough for Dosa. An inspirational day of cooking with a great teacher!
  • 5/5 from Jillian Blackall, attended Oct 2023: The teacher was very welcoming and she knows all the traditional methods of Indian cooking. The class was interactive - we all had a chance to cook something. The venue was a manageable walk from Epping Station. The food was very substantial and I really enjoyed cooking and eating it.
  • 5/5 from Maria Dunne, attended Jun 2023: Fabulous afternoon spent in good company learning how to make delicious no fuss Indian food. Wonderful host. Amazing food. Highly recommended!
  • 5/5 from Katrina Sandbach, attended Oct 2022: Bhavna greeted me with warmth and humour, and before long my fellow students and I were munching on delicious Indian snacks and the best chai I've ever tasted; this would keep us going for the next few hours until we could enjoy the meals we were about to learn how to cook. Bhavna's stories and anecdotes brought her culture to life, and she generously offered cooking tips and tricks that one usually only hears from a dear family member. Importantly, each of us took turns preparing six delicious dishes that we shared as a feast (my photo simply doesn't do this justice), each leaving with containers full of takeaways. This was the best home-cooked Indian food I've ever tasted and now equipped with the booklet provided by Bhavna, I'm confident and excited about growing my vegetarian repertoire with everything I learned and experienced. Highly recommend!
  • 5/5 from Azar Masalehdani, attended Jun 2022: Incredible class, my partner and I loved every minute of it and have come away with some great skills for Indian cuisine. Bhavna was a fantastic teacher and even provided some history lessons along the way. Cheers, Mike and Azar
  • 5/5 from Jessica Stewart, attended Feb 2022: It was such an amazing session! I learnt so much and had a wonderful time. Would recommend this class to everyone!

Bhavna Kalra Shivalkar runs a Cooking school in Sydney called 'The Modern Desi Co' where she tries to break stereotypes about Indian cooking and making budget-friendly, nutritious food.
Bhavna is on a mission to teach people that there is more to Indian food than Butter chicken and Rogan Josh. Her cooking classes showcase her love for food and are infused with storytelling and memories so you can understand and appreciate where the ingredients came from and how easy it is to whip up a six to seven-course Indian meal any day of the week.
