Already turning and just want serious time at the lathe? Join Wood Academy in Mona Vale for five days of open studio turning, working on your own projects with Simon and the team on hand.
This is open workshop time for turners who already know their way around a lathe. There is no curriculum and no set project. You bring the work you want to do, or a skill you want to sharpen, and you turn, with an expert beside you when you want one.
Simon is on the floor throughout as a sounding board, with other Wood Academy experts on hand to help at the bench. Stuck on a form, second-guessing a cut, or chasing a finish that will not behave? Talk it through as it comes up. It is less instruction and more time on the tools, with people who know the craft nearby.
Why You'll Love This Class
  • Your agenda, not ours. No curriculum. Work on your own project or drill into one skill you want to improve.
  • Simon as a sounding board. An experienced turner on the floor to talk through problems as they happen, not a scripted lesson.
  • Expert help at the bench. Simon and other Wood Academy experts on hand whenever you need a second set of eyes.
  • Quality gear on hand. Vicmarc lathes, chucks and accessories, a range of Henry Taylor chisels, and Tormek T-8 and Vicmarc sharpening. Bring your own gear if you prefer.
  • Turn among peers. Five days alongside other experienced turners, picking up things you do not get working alone.
Learning Objectives and Outcomes
Because there is no set curriculum, what you get out of the week is what you bring to it. Over the five days you might:
  • Finish a project that has been sitting half-done.
  • Work through a technique you have been struggling with.
  • Get feedback on your form, tool control, and finishing.
  • Try something new, like hollow vessels, natural edge, or coring, with an expert watching on.
  • Sharpen the habits that carry over to every piece you turn after.
Course Content and Structure
The week runs five consecutive days, 9am to 4pm each day. There is no set structure, so you set the pace and the project. Come in each day with a plan for what you want to work on, or talk it through with Simon when you arrive, and use the time and the gear however suits your work best. Simon is on the floor throughout, with other Wood Academy experts on hand.
Hands-On Experience
This is hands-on from the first session to the last. You are at your own lathe the whole time, working on your own projects, with an expert moving between stations to give feedback as you cut. The value is in the direct guidance, so bring the work where you want another eye on it.
Take the Next Step
If you want proper time at the lathe with experts nearby and no lesson getting in the way, this is it. Book your spot.
What you'll get
You leave with progress on your own work and five days of hands-on feedback from Simon and the Wood Academy team. A lathe is provided for each student, along with Vicmarc chucks and accessories, a range of Henry Taylor chisels, and Tormek T-8 and Vicmarc sharpening. Basic bowl blanks are on hand for standard bowl work.
Knowledge required
This is an intermediate course for turners who have already turned bowls. Before booking, you should be comfortable setting up the lathe, controlling your tools through the key cuts, and shaping a bowl with a gouge. If you have not turned a bowl yet, start with our Intro to Woodturning or Five Day Woodturning course first. Participants aged 14 and over are welcome. If a minor is attending, a parent or guardian must remain on the premises for the duration of the class.
What to bring
Bring the project you want to work on. We keep basic bowl blanks on hand for standard bowl work, but if you are doing anything out of the norm, like hollow vessels, natural edge, or coring, bring your own timber, as we do not keep those blanks in stock. PPE is supplied. If you would rather use your own, bring a face mask, safety glasses or goggles, and earmuffs or earplugs. Closed shoes are mandatory for all students. Tools are supplied, but if you have your own turning chisels and chucks, bring them along to work with gear you are used to.
There is a kitchen on-site with a fridge, microwave, and dining room, and takeaway options within walking distance.
On parking: we have a limited number of spots on-site. They fill up, so it is worth arriving early to get one. If they are taken, there is street parking nearby, though that can fill quickly too, and you may end up parking a little further away.
