There’s a certain magic in creating something with your own two hands. The focus it demands, the joy it imparts, the sense of accomplishment when you transform a simple piece of timber into something extraordinary. At Wood Academy, we celebrate the power of craftsmanship, the way it can ignite passion, inspire creativity, and instil a deep sense of satisfaction. It’s why we believe in one simple truth: Wood Work is good work. The more makers in this world, the better.

Demonstrations including Instruction. Excellent approach. Then the follow up by teachers with individual students. It worked really well. I learnt enough to be confident at the lathe, and have a good basis for further development. Started with simple techniques and progressed at an appropriate speed to more complex techniques. Every question was answered professionally and was very helpful. Techniques were demonstrated until mastery was achieved. Good range of suitable materials, tools and ancillary items like polish, pencils and sandpaper. The smocks were good.

This class was given to me by my partner after she noticed I was interested in woodturning. I was very pleased to receive it, and was really looking forward to attending the 2 day class. It was excellent and far exceeded my expectations. Simon and Ken, who led the course, both brought years of practical experience and advice to the participants and by explaining and demonstrating the necessary skills we all progressed quite quickly. The projects we worked on were well chosen and structured to teach the fundamentals of the craft. The location, facilities and equipment were excellent, and I came away from the 2 days with several finished products that I'm very proud of. I would absolutely recommend this course to anyone interested in learning more about woodturning and wanting to understand the essential skills required to do it the right way. Definitely take this course if you want to know how to turn wood!

Excellent course with highly skilled instructors Simon & Ken. 1st class facilities, machinery & tools. Small group instruction with lots of 1 on 1. Nice friendly attendees. All in all, a really great 5 day class!

Annette Hallewell Apr 2024

Heaps of fun and learned a lot! Simon and Ken were amazing teachers - very knowledgeable, relaxed and great at guiding you at your pace and in an easy to understand way. I can now comfortably go and make my own bowls
The course covered a good range of techniques and gave time to explore your own ideas. The equipment and resources provided were good quality and there was no shortage of timber to make as many bowls as time and skill allowed.

I have done two previous wood turning classes at Timberbits, enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot.
Simon Begg, the tutor, is the main reason I went back for another class.
Simon is a 'natural' teacher, his level of skill is matched by his patience and the calm atmosphere he creates. Making it a perfect learning experience. While teaching basic skills, he also allows freedom to explore those skills, avoiding a rigid approach to the craft.
There is plenty of equipment, of high quality, for all participants.

The teachers David and Flynn were great, everyone was progressing thru the projects at different rates and they did a great job of making sure all students got relevant instruction at different intervals. Knowledgeable and attentive instruction, all equipment and materials high quality, space was easy to get too and very new. I had a blast using hand tools to make mitre boxes, a chiseling project and a bread board over the 8 weeks. The longer course is good value for money, averaging about $100/3 hour session with all equipment, instruction and Materials included, so would definitely recommend for beginners like myself! Loved this class, I would return in a heart beat once I save up for another round.

Awesome experience! Was a bit of a steep learning curve for a beginner, but the Nick and Eliza were so supportive and encouraging. Super happy with the results!

I would recommend this short course to anyone regardless of their skill level. As a person who suffers mental health, I found that wood therapy is fantastic for creating a space to calm the mind. The teacher is very knowledgeable and I am keen to undertake another course with them.

Great class and very easy to understand, good skills to learn and good theory to start the lesson to set you up for success.
Great and easy parking just outside the venue

I thought it was a well pitched worthwhile workshop, the tutor was learned, patient and encouraging, the space clean and very well equipped, the tools excellent, and sharp, and we four students came away with very acceptable first goes. Most impressed by the first rate seasoned blanks to choose from, Huon, silkyoak, sassafras and Himalayan cedar … didn’t expect that! Well done thanks Lance

This was a great course that has given me some skills that will make the rest of my woodworking much more enjoyable.
I enjoyed the balance of instruction for each technique and the flexibility to work on specific focus areas. For example I had to spend a lot of time to get a new plane working properly but didn’t feel like I’d missed out on the other content.

Gary Halder Mar 2024

Excellent course with David a great instructor. Good pace and nice sharp tools make things easier.

Michael Zolotarev Mar 2024

The course was hands-on. Specific enough to give us beginners sense of confidence, and flexible to let us master the new skills.
The set up was great, with everyone having access to any tools/machines without queuing

Annette Hallewell Feb 2024

Simon and David were very generous with their knowledge and clearly know their stuff! Great way to learn a new skill and techniques in a nice small class. The small class size made it easy to ask questions and get assistance when needed. Came away having made 4 pens!

Thanks for a great two day Wood Turning course. The course was engaging, illustrative and a wonderful opportunity to learn new skills. The new venue was good and teachers were fantastic. Enjoyable few days.

Aurel Vasilescu Feb 2024

The course was a combined birthday and fathers day present. The Teachers were very engaging and patient with us. For a start up venue it was very well put together. All the tools and materials that we required and were provided were of the best quality. I was shown the best techniques for working with wood, we first made some wands (as in Harry Potter) and the we learnt bowl turning. I believe it was good value for money. What I liked the most was that both Teachers spent what ever time we needed with all the class and they gave me renewed confidence in wood turning. It was a pleasure to learn.

Knowledgeable and approachable tutors. Excellent teaching: demonstration, supported practice, and time to revisit techniques. Five star venue: the space, resources and range of tools provided. Highly recommend Timberbits courses.

Simon is a great teacher. He was able to cater to all skill levels without anyone feeling left out or falling behind. I hadn't used a lathe since High School, many, many years ago, but felt very comfortable and capable from the very start of the course. He was endlessly patient and encouraging to all participants. The course was challenging and my brain said a big 'thank you' for the effort involved. I not only felt that I was learning a lot, but was amazed by the quantity and quality of my output during the 5 days. Matt and Darren from Timberbits were very also helpful and encouraging, I will definitely be doing courses with them in the future and have already recommended them to several friends.

This was a fantastic course. I attended this workshop to develop skills for teaching Stage 5 Design and Technology in a high school with limited wood working resources and was pleased to have a teacher with incredible knowledge and experience in this area and to also be amongst a few other teachers learning the same. It was a full-on weekend, having learnt lots of different techniques, types of tools and types of materials. Really worthwhile!
