Looking for a hands-on thing to do in Sydney? Join Wood Academy in Marrickville for two days at the lathe and turn your own bowl or platter from a solid block of timber.
There is a real satisfaction in turning a bowl. You start with a rough blank, and cut by cut you bring out the form hidden in the grain, until you are holding something you shaped with your own hands. This class teaches you how, right from your first cut.
Over the two days you will take a bowl or platter from rough blank to finished piece. Day one is the foundations: preparing and mounting your blank, getting a feel for the lathe, and learning to ride the bevel for clean, controlled cuts. Day two is about refining the form, adding any detail, and bringing it to a smooth, finished surface.
Why You'll Love This Class
  • A finished piece to take home. You leave with your own turned bowl or platter, taken from rough blank to finished form over the two days.
  • Tool control that carries everywhere. Riding the bevel and a controlled cut are the heart of every turning project, and that is exactly what you will drill here.
  • Form and design, not just shaping. You will learn what makes a bowl or platter sit right, from wall thickness to the line of the curve.
  • A turner beside you, whatever your level. Each student has their own lathe, with chisels and chucks on hand and an experienced turner guiding every step.
Learning Objectives and Outcomes
By the end of the two days, you will be able to:
  • Prepare and mount a blank ready for turning.
  • Ride the bevel and control the gouge for clean cuts.
  • Shape and refine the form of a bowl or platter.
  • Balance design choices such as wall thickness and the line of the curve.
  • Sand and finish a turned piece to a high standard.
Course Content and Structure
Day one starts with your lathe and your timber. You will prepare your blank, get familiar with the lathe, and begin shaping your first bowl or platter, with the focus on balance, design and riding the bevel for clean, controlled cuts. The groundwork here is everything the rest of the weekend builds on.
Day two moves into refining. You will shape and detail your piece, correct the form, and take it through to a finished surface. The aim across both days is to understand the process, not just to finish the project, so every piece you turn after this gets better.
Hands-On Experience
This is a hands-on course from the first session. You are at your own lathe with real timber, and your instructor moves between stations giving direct, personal feedback as you cut. Wherever you are starting from, you make progress on your own piece every step of the way.
Take the Next Step
Turning a bowl or a platter is the kind of thing that gets under your skin in the best way. Bring whatever level you are at, get your hands on the timber, and leave with a piece you turned yourself. Book your spot today.
What you'll get
You leave with your own turned bowl or platter, a working grip on riding the bevel and clean tool control, and the design know-how to make the next piece better than the last. A lathe is provided for each student, and turning blanks are supplied and included in the tuition.
