Looking for something meaningful to do with your evenings? Join Wood Academy in Marrickville and discover the quiet satisfaction of shaping timber with your own hands.
Over eight weekly 3-hour sessions, you'll gain practical knowledge and hands-on experience in traditional woodworking techniques — with a focus on hand tools that form the foundation of the craft.
This course is designed for individuals with little to no prior woodworking experience and beginners looking to build a strong foundation in woodworking skills.
What you will learn:
  • Safety First: Understanding and implementing woodworking safety protocols, including proper tool usage, protective gear and workshop organisation.
  • Hand Tools of the Trade: Getting to know essential hand tools — hand saws, chisels, planes, and marking and measuring tools — learning how to use them accurately and safely.
  • Wood Selection: Exploring different types of timber, their characteristics and how to select the appropriate material for various projects.
  • Measuring and Marking: Developing precision in measuring, marking and layout techniques — the skills that separate good work from guesswork.
  • Cutting and Shaping: Practical experience using hand saws, chisels and planes to cut and shape timber with control and confidence.
  • Joinery Techniques: Learning the fundamental principles of joinery methods, including mitred joints and precision fitting.
  • Finishing and Sanding: Understanding the finishing process, including sanding and applying protective coatings to create a polished final product.
  • Project Work: Applying skills and techniques to complete three progressively challenging projects.
Your Projects:
Bread Board - Master accurate marking, cutting and planing on a practical piece you'll use every day.
Mitred Boxes - Introduce joinery, precision fitting and attention to detail.
Mallet - Bring together everything you've learned while exploring basic design considerations and assembly.
Each project builds on the last, so you'll finish the course with real skills — and real pieces to show for it.
Course Structure:
  • Each evening begins with a brief theory session to introduce the topic and demonstrate techniques.
  • Participants then have hands-on practice time, with guidance and supervision from the instructor.
  • Projects progress in complexity, allowing you to apply newly acquired skills with plenty of support along the way.
What you'll walk away with:
At the end of this course, you'll have the knowledge, experience and confidence to tackle woodworking projects using hand tools - the foundation of the craft.
