Put simply, life experience combined with a desire to write qualifies you to tell your own story. In this creative writing class at Sydney Community College, you will tap into your inner writer and be guided through ways to tell your own stories.
Life’s challenges and complexities serve as grist for the writer’s mill, and nobody navigates this life without struggle. Our experiences shape us and inform our worldview. Our personal circumstances, combined with our lived experience, our observations of the world, and our individual personality make us unique; therefore, the narratives of our lives are unique.
During this class, we will read, discuss, and be inspired by excerpts from exemplary life-writing texts. With in-class writing exercises, we will focus on aspects of memoir writing, and you will have the opportunity to share your work in a confidential and nurturing environment.
What we will cover during the class:
  • Telling your truth - Memoir, autobiography, and the personal essay
  • Sources and memory
  • Finding your voice
  • Detail, drama, dialogue
  • Structure: shaping your narrative
  • Workshopping - where to now? Printing, publishing, and self-publishing options
By the end of this creative writing course, you will feel confident drawing on your new knowledge and skills to continue your writing journey independently.
Please note: This is an interactive course and requires regular input from all participants. All students must be over 18+ years of age.

“I like to teach practical, hands-on courses with lots of Q&A as I feel that is the best way for a person to learn. Whilst I provide all educational resources to assist the student with learning, my workshops enable the participant to apply learnings through a series of exercises back into a practical work setting upon completion of the courses”, said Keith.
