2 x 5 hours Class size 6 to 10 guests       $499

In this beginner-friendly two day furniture restoration course in Marrickville, students will bring a piece of furniture they would like to get started repairing and, through collaborative engagement, learn about a variety of common problems and repairs for different pieces of furniture. • 5/5 from Mick Rothery, attended Oct 2026: A thoroughly enjoyable weekend on the furniture restoration woodwork course at Among The Trees. Heaps of sage advice, great hands-on experience and an attentive teaching team. Best of all, I walked away with a rejuvenated piece of useful furniture for the home. Thank you ATT!
  • 5/5 from Joanne Upton, attended May 2026: So awesome... great instructors, brilliant space, learnt loads and am inspired to try more. Loved it!
  • 5/5 from John Fox, attended Jan 2026: Class leaders were both knowledgeable in their craft and enthusiastic about the projects we attendees brought along. Got a foundational framework for approaching a restoration project, and because of the diverse projects provided by attendees there was ample opportunity to see various techniques in practice. As always with these things, would have loved more time!
  • 5/5 from Charnelle Mondy Cohen, attended Jan 2026: I really enjoyed this course! I knew nothing - I learnt a lot about trees, wood and furniture as well as techniques for repairing it. It was so satisfying to have the time and tools to work on my project as well as see the progress on others. I feel much more capable of finishing my furniture restoration project at home now. Highly recommended.
  • 5/5 from Jenny Lin, attended Jan 2026: I really enjoyed the session. It was a wonderful introduction for people interested in woodwork restoration.
  • 5/5 from Rhaelene Freeman, attended Nov 2025: Great couple of days. I really enjoyed the seeing the variety of projects of the whole group. Different problems, different solutions. My project is home. Cleaned up, with finish. Looks great. All I have to do is reassemble. I'll send you a pic when it is on its legs again. Thanks so much to Shane and Luke!!
  • 5/5 from Gillian Abbott, attended Nov 2025: Shaun and Luke have so much knowledge and go to great lengths to share it. I not only learnt all of the techniques for restoring my chair, but also the techniques every one in the class used. It's rare to find a teacher who can support nine students all working on totally different restoration pieces, and do it so well. I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend workshop and will be back to learn more. Thankyou both for an amazing weekend. Gillian
  • 5/5 from Shin Dar Long, attended Nov 2025: Great knowledgeable, passionate teachers made the time fly. Learnt a lot and did a lot. Great time. Thanks!!
  • 5/5 from Rosie Bennett, attended Jul 2025: Some of my favorite parts were the indepth explanations on all methods, materials and ideas. Shane’s passion and experience really shined through his talks so the ‘theory’ parts of the days were an experience within themselves. I took a piece and learned how to structurally repair it and restore it using specific techniques and finishes tailored to the piece whilst maintaining the charm and authenticity. The venue was perfectly adequate and the materials provided. It was a really well structured weekend.
  • 5/5 from Wendy Thompson, attended Jul 2025: I’ve learnt so much and I enjoyed every minute of the two days. The science behind the growth of trees and why/how we should treat a piece of furniture was so important to the course and amazing to learn. Shane explained why and what repairs and glues in each of our pieces. Shane was so informative and his explanations made it so easy to understand. Having Luke to help all of us through the two days made us all feel like we all had help and a second person to ask questions. Was a great course. Can’t wait to do another in the future.
  • 5/5 from Melanie Hughes, attended Jul 2025: This was my third class. I was thought the format was great. I got to repair a very nostalgic piece my grandad made. So interesting to learn about the way approach to everyone’s different projects. Shane was an excellent and very knowledgeable teacher who gave us lots of information about timber, dealing with paint and restoring surfaces. He and Luke couldn’t have been more helpful with so many practical skills. Really love the vibe of Among the trees. Thanks so much Shane and Luke.
  • 5/5 from Jacqueline Roth, attended Jul 2025: I highly recommend the Furniture Restoration course to anyone looking to develop the skills needed to repair those upsetting cracks, dings, or stains on a beloved piece of furniture. Shane has a passion for the subject and his depth of knowledge is impressive. An inspiring course and a wonderful addition to my growing woodworking skill set!!
  • 5/5 from Bronwyn Rennex, attended Jul 2025: I loved this course. Shane really knows his stuff and is great at explaining the whys and hows of furniture restoration to beginners. I'm hooked and looking forward to taking another course soon.
  • 5/5 from Jennifer Kent, attended Jul 2025: Great workshop. Very knowledgeable teachers & conducted at a good pace. Highly recommend.
  • 5/5 from Natasha Rawlings, attended May 2025: I really loved the class and being taught by Shane and Luke. It is a great introductory course to learn a few new skills to get you started, and know if you want to properly start on the journey. It's clear this is a life long journey but everyone can pick up some of the basic skills. The people on the course were great to meet as well.
  • 5/5 from Sue Cullen, attended May 2025: Teachers and class was awesome! Would definitely be doing some more courses in the very near future.
  • 5/5 from Darshini Thurairatnam, attended May 2025: This class was great! Shane and Luke are super knowledgeable and passionate about woodworking and furniture restoration. I went in with zero experience and have learnt so much in the two days.
  • 5/5 from Sue Hearn, attended Sep 2024: I loved this class. I would have got more benefit from more participants and a variety of projects however appreciated the smaller class too. Loved the workshop. I have begun restoring furniture in Tasmania and am self taught with a lot of help from free online courses, woodworkers guild of america and UK and US trained restorers on you tube but, wanted to make sure i am on track. So much to learn but feel I am on track. Yes value for money. combined trip to sydney with seeing friends. Shane was informed and straightforward and I could have listened to him for hours. Lots of experience to tap into there. Could have done a much longer course. Only complaint is that you are not expanding to tasmania. :)
  • 5/5 from Paris Ramrakha, attended Sep 2024: Fabulous. Shane is so knowledgeable and has a clear way of explaining things. Thank you!
  • 5/5 from Tom Honeyman, attended Sep 2024: This weekend Furniture Restoration Course was a really great mix of lots of practical information and hands on application of that information, all delivered in a flexible, friendly and enjoyable format. Came away with a basic but practical understanding of woods, joinery, surfaces/finishes and cleaning. But also fundamentally changed my thoughts on what "restoration" actually is.
  • 5/5 from Marge Overs, attended Jun 2024: Loved the furniture repair and restoration class. Shane and Luke were fabulous teachers, generous with their time and knowledge. Great value
  • 5/5 from Sally-Anne Andrews, attended Jun 2024: It was very informative and a delight to attend Shane and Luke were both amazing
  • 5/5 from Gregor Erdmann, attended Dec 2023: Shane was very knowledgeable and willing to share his experience. The other attendees had a great attitude, willing to help each other and learn more. The structure was flexible, but also structured in the three levels/phases - but also dependant somewhat on what pieces people brought in to repair/were interested in - fortunately Shane also had pieces which we could talk about. I think realistically, nothing would ever be able to be completed in the two days - and it might be better to position this as an introductory course. Handouts covering the main points and resources/stores would be handy, as well highlighting the roadmap for follow up courses eg finishing, upholstery etc.
  • 5/5 from Isabel Ritchie, attended Dec 2023: I had a great weekend and learnt so much. My teacher was Shane, he was not only so knowledgeable, but very good at breaking the processes down and giving you insight into why each step is so important to achieve a great outcome with your projects. His passion for all to do with woodworking is infectious The area that was set up for each of us was perfect for working. We were surrounded by all the tools you could need and we got to learn about some too. The time for the weekend course was perfect. I learnt about how to go ahead with restoring my side table that has water damage and feel confident I can complete the rest of the restoration on my own now. Thank you Shane and thank you to Luke and his team for putting this on. Isabel.

Among the Trees is an ethical and sustainability based start-up for reclaimed timber located in Marrickville.
Saving timber from demolitions or other discarded uses and making it available to the public through a retail timber shop and woodworking classes. Accessibility to wood doesn't just mean being wheelchair friendly (which we are), it also means helping customers understand how to use and source reclaimed timber. To make it as easy as possible to work with, we offer custom machining and glueing, so the timber in our store can be squared, resurfaced and cut to specific dimensions. We also help empower individuals to have the confidence to undertake woodworking projects by offering woodworking beginners classes that are taught with simple hand tools.

Lumberyards and wood workshops can be intimidating sometimes, ATT is one of the few places that caters not only to architects, planners, homeowners as well as carpenters and tradespeople but also to customers that have little to no woodworking experience and are embarking on DIY and student projects or trying their hand at repair, renovating or building.
Our workshop at Among The Trees is set up to be the perfect space to learn about hand tools, reclaimed timber, and woodworking. We’ve been hard at work collecting, restoring and tuning all the tools required to learn woodworking, and a few extra ones as well.

All-in-all, everyone that is interested in wood is welcome!
