  • 5/5 from Mieko Mori, attended Aug 2026: We joined a Shodo Japanese calligraphy class as a birthday gift for my husband, and it was such a wonderful experience. It was his first time trying Japanese calligraphy with a brush and ink, and he was very excited to give it a go. After some practice, we each completed a final piece using a word of our choice, which we were able to take home as a special keepsake. Ren, our teacher, was very patient, attentive and encouraging throughout the class, making the experience both enjoyable and relaxing. It was a lovely way to learn more about Japanese culture, enjoy a peaceful moment away from everyday life, and feel a real sense of satisfaction when we completed our own piece. We had so much fun and would highly recommend this experience to anyone looking for something a little different and meaningful!
  • 5/5 from Deanne Prusiak, attended Jul 2026: Ren Sensei is a great teacher and I had such a wonderful lesson. He taught me the basic strokes first, then I practised the kanji that I chose. Ren Sensei taught me how to breathe properly and put calm music on while I was practising the shodo. He was encouraging but also showed me where I could improve. I was happy with the end result. He gave me my final kanji on a board with a nice hanging rope and all of the practice ones as well. I'm hooked! I will definitely be back. Ren Sensei, arigato gozaimashita!

Ren, the instructor was patient, good at explaining and taught intuitively. It was one of the best classes I’ve attended. Learnt about rubbing ink & basic strokes, chose a word, had it translated to Japanese, then was taught how to write it on beautiful parchment. All in 1 hour. Amazing! I ended up buying a practice kit…

  • 5/5 from Emmanuel Sokias, attended May 2022: Ren’s calligraphy workshop was a great experience. We went on a Saturday and shared the class with another person. It was an intimate setting. Ren briefly touched on the history of the art of Japanese calligraphy, and helped us create our own ink from water and stone. Ren showed us the form required for the brush strokes and allowed us plenty of practice on tracing paper, before finishing our final attempt on high quality paper. The whole process is quite meditative; we were encouraged to breathe in tandem with the brushstrokes. Quiet, ambient music accompanies the class. Ren took plenty of photos and allowed us to keep practicing until we were satisfied with our artwork. A charming little experience.
