What if you could create light and shadow without filling your drawing in? In this beginner-friendly online art class, we'll explore hatching and cross-hatching through the quiet, thoughtful world of Giorgio Morandi's still-life drawings.
Rather than simply learning a drawing technique, you'll experiment with how lines can describe light, volume, and the subtle relationships between ordinary objects. We'll start with simple exercises before gradually building a small still-life drawing of our own.
No previous drawing experience is needed. You don't need to be “good at drawing”; just curious and willing to slow down and look.
What you'll do
  • Take a brief look at Morandi's distinctive approach to still life
  • Explore different types of hatching and cross-hatching
  • Experiment with creating light and dark using only lines
  • Use hatching to describe the form of simple objects
  • Create a small still-life drawing inspired by Morandi
What you'll learn
You'll explore how to:
  • Create different tones using the density of your lines
  • Use hatching and cross-hatching to suggest light and shadow
  • Make flat shapes appear three-dimensional
  • Observe the subtle relationships between objects
  • Use simplicity and restraint to create an expressive drawing
  • Slow down and really look at what you're drawing
Who is this class for
This class is suitable for complete beginners as well as experienced artists who would like to explore a slower, more observational approach to drawing.

  • Several sheets of paper
  • A pencil, pen, or fountain pen
  • An eraser (optional)
  • A few simple household objects to draw, such as cups, plants, bottles, or jars

Class format
This is a live, interactive online class with demonstrations, guided exercises, and plenty of time to draw. I'll introduce each exercise, demonstrate the technique, and then give you time to experiment with it yourself. There is no pressure to produce a perfect finished drawing. Hello and welcome,
My name is Sorour. I am a multidisciplinary artist, bookbinder, educator, and the artist behind Gallery 19. I believe art education is about more than mastering a technique.
My classes combine practical skills and craftsmanship with experimentation, play and creative exploration. I want students to learn something tangible while also having space to be curious, express themselves and enjoy the process of making.
With formal training in visual art and a background in mental health studies, I've developed a particular interest in the ways creativity can support self-expression, curiosity and wellbeing.
