Japanese Fabric Ball 'Kimekomi Mari' Accessory Workshop

Create a one-of-a-kind necklace or keychain using vintage Japanese fabric

2 hours Class size 1 to 10 guests

  $90 (Afterpay available)

This workshop introduces the traditional Japanese craft "Kimekomi Mari" in a modern, sustainable way.
You will decorate paper clay balls using a variety of ethically sourced materials, hand-selected in Japan by your teacher, Izumi, such as kimono fabric, gorgeous liberty cotton prints, interesting pieces of leather and fabulous festive sparkles.
Izumi will demonstrate how to make the paper clay base at the beginning of the session, as drying time is too long for on-site making. Participants can then complete their own unique accessory, choosing to finish it as a necklace or a keychain, while enjoying a relaxing, mindful creative experience suitable for all skill levels.
Izumi Montgomery is a Japanese artist and workshop facilitator based in Sydney. After completing her Master of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts, she studied fashion design at TAFE and began creating wearable art and accessories using second-hand and upcycled materials. Izumi regularly runs sustainability-focused textile workshops at Reverse Garbage and community venues across Sydney.

  • 5/5 from Annette Hansen, attended May 2026: Our teacher Izumi was well prepared with all the equipment and learning guides we needed. There were finished samples to provide inspiration for our choice of fabrics to use on the clay balls. Izumi took us slowly through the process of making the clay balls highlighting the materials needed and likely places we could purchase supplies. Then Izumi showed us how to cover balls with fabric pieces to make necklace attachments. Workshop numbers we small so we were able to have a lot of help from Izumi to make a professional looking necklace. I would recommend this class to anyone interested in Japanese craft and accessories.
