The class felt very relaxing and the perfect amount of time to learn and then perfect a new skill! Sue and Annalee were incredible instructors, so patient, knowledgeable and kind. We were asking for lots of different colours and they were so accommodating and genuinely wanted us to love our rugs! Would highly recommend the class

Using the beautiful big looms shipped all the way from Finland and Sweden, which each had their own quirks was really cool. Excited to look at learning some new types of weave after feeling very inspired by the creations of some of the other students! Highly recommend!

Weaving seems to me an antidote to our fast indigestible world. Calm focus creation …… Try it …. Plus : great Chinese food almost next door. New adventure’s in this cosmopolitan part of Sydney. Everything at ex Materia is sustainably resourced even the labels.

  • 5/5 from Sarah Henry, attended Sep 2025: As an absolute beginner to weaving I signed up and was treated to a wonderful day of discovery and creativity. Su and Anneli were so incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about their craft - it was completely infectious from the moment we arrived. And something I hadn't realised was that they are also passionate about sustainability and so all the materials we used were upcycled fabrics, a huge array of colours too.

I regained my musle memory of weaving with floor loom which I learnt & enjoyed immensely a decade ago in US and also learnt a new beautiful method in making the ending edges of the rug. I had a very soothing and relaxing experience through the entire hours of weaving in the class.

  • 5/5 from Anya Dunstone, attended Feb 2025: If you are thinking about trying weaving for you self or as a gift for a frend I 100% become ExMateria. I had a truly terrific Time with Su. I have loved weaving for the majorety of my life, but never had the chance to work with a flor loom. I am absolutely in love. Su was an excellent teacher she had me weaving with confidence very quickly. I loved learning how to work the loom and feel my technique Is greatly improved just from the one day class, and I am seriously proud of my rug and had a great time. Cant wait to learn more from Su and Anneli ️️

  • 5/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Nov 2024: Outstanding clear instruction. Beautiful looms, beautiful process of weaving. The teacher made sure that it was a successful process and took the time to explain details so that if I wanted to, I could make another rug independently on the floor loom. (Once you take the class, you can book in to rent a loom at any time from Ex Materia.) The rug I made is very much loved by my cats (they wanted it to be in their spot, not on the floor) and looks professional.
  • 5/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Nov 2024: Su and Anneli are such great and passionate teacher in weaving. I did a one day class and truly enjoyed the class. I learned so much and highly recommend this class. It’s such a creative space. Hope to come back to do more weaving.
  • 5/5 from Jennie Lau, attended Oct 2024: My friend and I had an amazing time at the Introduction to Floor Loom Weaving class on the weekend. I can't believe that we had managed to weave a whole rug by the end of the workshop. Su and Anneli were such wonderful teachers - they really took the time to explain different techniques, helping us to work out the best way to achieve the vision we had in mind for our rugs. I would highly recommend this workshop and would love to come back and do more classes with ExMateria in the future :)
  • 5/5 from Chris van der Wall, attended Oct 2024: Teachers Su & Anneli were fantastic- highly skilled weavers and very capable teachers. The looms were lovely to work on. I would recommend this workshop to anyone.
  • 5/5 from Irene Mayo, attended Jul 2024: Su & Anneli we really amazing. They provided us with one on one support and they made the experience really fun and relaxing. Thank you both for taking the time to teach us how to weave a rug.
  • 5/5 from Holly Julian, attended Apr 2024: The weaving workshop was great- not too difficult to follow, quite relaxing and meditative. Su and Anneli were friendly and patient teachers and the venue was easily accessible. I would highly recommend
  • 5/5 from Romy Waring, attended Jan 2024: My sister and I had the best time, this is something we are interested in, such that we are following our fibre art passion. The teachers were so accommodating, relaxed, knowledgeable and were happy for you to take control of every aspect if you so desired, equally happy to help you along. There aren't many places in Sydney where you can experience working on a floor loom, so we were very excited for the day. There is no doubt you will walk away with a new skill and something that is useful. This skill can be applied to floor looms, table looms, hand looms - it's great to be able to get your mind into something worthwhile. Mine has been turned into a wall piece.
  • 5/5 from Helen Gaulton, attended Dec 2023: Hi my sister and I participated in the loom weaving class, we had a great time and came away with rugs we are both very happy with. The teacher Su was very knowledgeable and friendly, helping us make the best rug we could. The venue was very easily accessed from Redfern station only a couple of minutes walk and there was a cafe and IGA nearby where we were able to get food and coffee - we were doing the class on a Sunday so the fact that the cafe was open was great because we were able to get lunch there. The venue is in the old Locomotive store and is a very interesting building. The materials supplied were of very good quality and we were able to choose the colours that we wanted for our rugs and tweak the designs to our preferences. My only negative was the room was quite hot for me, to other people it might have been a perfect temperature, perhaps a standup fan in the room may have helped, as the air con was building controlled. Al in all my sister and I had a great time and I would highly recommend this class.
  • 5/5 from Milan Rokaya, attended Oct 2023: Both Annalise and Sue were great teachers and their instructions made it a breeze to weave my very first rug. Great space to weave and loved working on an authentic handloom from Finland. I love rugs and this class was a great experience to get hands on on the process. On the plus side, all their Yarn is sustainably sourced.
