Mossarium Workshop Sydney

Sydney's most unique terrarium workshop — create a living moss garden under glass in our boutique Redfern studio

1 hour Location Redfern Class size 1 to 6 (public classes), 8 to 100   $149 (Afterpay available)

A mossarium is one of nature's most quietly beautiful creations — a living moss garden sealed under glass that sustains itself through its own water cycle, requiring almost no maintenance and lasting for years.
What you'll do in this plant workshop:
In this one-hour workshop, our expert botanical team will guide you through creating your own mossarium using special varieties of living moss, wood chips, pebbles and feature rocks — all housed in a beautiful contemporary glass vessel with a disc lid that redirects condensation back onto the moss, emulating nature's own water cycle.
Choose your base on the day — cork, natural oak or concrete — each giving your mossarium a distinct aesthetic to suit your home or office.
You'll learn
  • How a mossarium works as a self-sustaining living ecosystem
  • How to layer substrate, wood chips and pebbles for long-term moss health
  • How to select and position moss varieties for visual harmony
  • How to style your mossarium using feature rocks and natural elements
  • How to care for your mossarium once you take it home

FAQ

What is a mossarium and where can I make one in Sydney?
A mossarium is a living moss garden housed in a sealed glass vessel — a self-sustaining ecosystem that uses its own condensation cycle to keep the moss alive with almost no maintenance. Merchant & Green at 686 Bourke Street, Redfern offers Sydney's only dedicated mossarium workshop, running from their boutique florist and plant studio. In the one-hour class, students create their own mossarium using special varieties of living moss, wood chips, pebbles and feature rocks in a contemporary 15x15cm glass vessel with a disc lid. Available with a choice of cork, natural oak or concrete base. From $149pp, with 989 five-star reviews across their workshop program.
How long does a mossarium last and how much maintenance does it need?
A well-made mossarium can last for many years with almost no maintenance. The sealed glass vessel with disc lid redirects condensation back onto the moss, emulating nature's own water cycle — meaning the mossarium essentially waters itself. Unlike terrariums with tropical plants, moss requires very little light and no fertilising. At Merchant & Green's Mossarium Workshop in Redfern, students learn exactly how to build the substrate layers correctly to ensure their mossarium thrives long-term, and leave with a detailed care card covering everything they need to know.
What is the difference between a mossarium and a terrarium?
A mossarium is a specific style of terrarium that uses only living moss rather than tropical plants — creating a minimal, sculptural landscape that is even lower maintenance than a standard closed terrarium. The moss-only format produces a distinctive, architectural aesthetic that suits contemporary interiors beautifully. At Merchant & Green in Redfern, both mossarium and greenhouse terrarium workshops are available — the Mossarium Workshop ($149pp, 1 hour) focuses on moss-only compositions in a contemporary glass vessel with a choice of cork, natural oak or concrete base, while the Greenhouse Terrarium Workshop ($115–$185pp, 1 hour) uses miniature tropical plants in a classic glass dome.

The whole journey from the welcome to the introduction, the education and the hands on step by step instructions was a symphony of fun, camaraderie and finally pride in the Terrarium that I had created and could take home with pride. Thank you guys. The best gift I received from my daughter and the best experience ever.

  • 2/5 from Thanh Le, attended Feb 2026: I told everyone in the class I wanted create a terrarium for my desk so I wanted to be meticulous with everything because I wanted something beautiful to look at every day. With that goal in mind, I felt pretty rushed through the class - there wasn't enough time for me to think things through and make the best choices. Additionally, they were very stingy with the plants that we can choose. I was slow executing the instructions and was left with some pretty stale looking plants to choose from after everyone else has already chosen theirs. Then when I asked for more, the teacher just said the stale looking plants will be fine so I had to settle. Other than that, teacher himself was pleasant and helpful enough and answered all the questions people had. Overall, not recommended for someone like me who wanted to be meticulous. It's more for people who want to chill and make something different (which is probably most people).
