A closed greenhouse terrarium is one of nature's small miracles — a self-sustaining ecosystem sealed in glass that thrives on almost nothing. Built correctly, it can flourish for years with minimal care.
At Merchant & Green, we've been teaching Sydney how to build them for over 10 years — longer than any other florist or workshop studio in the city. In this one-hour class, our expert botanical team will guide you through every step — from drainage and soil layering to plant placement and decorative styling — so you leave with something genuinely beautiful and built to last.
Choose your size at checkout — Regular, Medium or Large — each using the same premium materials and expert guidance.
What You'll Learn
* How a closed greenhouse terrarium works as a self-sustaining ecosystem
* How to layer drainage, soil and moss for long-term plant health
* How to select and position plants for balance, growth and visual harmony
* How to style your terrarium using decorative stones and natural elements
* How to care for your terrarium once you take it home
The Experience

FAQ

Where can I do a greenhouse terrarium workshop in Sydney?
Merchant & Green at 686 Bourke Street, Redfern offers Sydney's most established greenhouse terrarium workshop, running regularly for over 10 years. Led by their expert botanical team in a boutique florist studio, the one-hour class guides complete beginners through building a closed self-sustaining glass terrarium — from drainage and soil layering to plant placement and decorative styling. Available in three sizes (Regular, Medium and Large), with 989 five-star reviews across their workshop program. Public classes accommodate up to 6 guests, with private corporate bookings available for groups of 6–100.
What is a closed greenhouse terrarium and how is it different to a regular terrarium?
A closed greenhouse terrarium is a self-sustaining ecosystem sealed inside a glass container with a lid — the plants, soil and moisture create their own water cycle, meaning the terrarium can thrive for years with almost no maintenance. Unlike open terrariums or succulent bowls, which require regular watering, a closed greenhouse terrarium is sealed and largely self-regulating once built correctly. At Merchant & Green's greenhouse terrarium workshop in Redfern, students learn exactly how to build this ecosystem — layering drainage, soil and moss before planting and styling their finished terrarium to take home.
How long does a greenhouse terrarium workshop take?
A greenhouse terrarium workshop at Merchant & Green in Redfern runs for one hour. In that time students learn the full technique — drainage layering, soil preparation, plant selection and placement, and decorative styling using moss and natural stones — with expert florist guidance throughout. The finished terrarium is packaged to take home the same day. Classes run on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with public sessions for up to 6 guests and private group bookings available for 6–100 guests at the Redfern studio or at your Sydney CBD location.

The whole journey from the welcome to the introduction, the education and the hands on step by step instructions was a symphony of fun, camaraderie and finally pride in the Terrarium that I had created and could take home with pride. Thank you guys. The best gift I received from my daughter and the best experience ever.

  • 2/5 from Thanh Le, attended Feb 2026: I told everyone in the class I wanted create a terrarium for my desk so I wanted to be meticulous with everything because I wanted something beautiful to look at every day. With that goal in mind, I felt pretty rushed through the class - there wasn't enough time for me to think things through and make the best choices. Additionally, they were very stingy with the plants that we can choose. I was slow executing the instructions and was left with some pretty stale looking plants to choose from after everyone else has already chosen theirs. Then when I asked for more, the teacher just said the stale looking plants will be fine so I had to settle. Other than that, teacher himself was pleasant and helpful enough and answered all the questions people had. Overall, not recommended for someone like me who wanted to be meticulous. It's more for people who want to chill and make something different (which is probably most people).
